Java Update for 10.6?

What - if anything - is happening with a Java update for 10.6? I show both 32 and 64 bit Java SE 6 versions 1.6.0_37-b06-434 in Java Preferences App.

Now that Oracle has released an update (yesterday) to Java for the latest Zero Day security issues, will Apple release an update via Software Update to Java 6 that is included with 10.6?

There is no Update option in the Java Preferences App in the Applications/Utilities/ folder on 10.6 like 10.7+ has in the Java System Preferences Pane.

Or do we update Java 6 from the Oracle site? Or go to Java 7 from Oracle?

I'm not about to try, since I would rather stand on my hands and walk blindfolded, backwards through eight lanes of highway traffic than run a Java applet, but I wonder if anyone is able to run any applets in Snow now.

Good question. I see that the Applet Launcher.app looks to have been updated by JavaForMacOSX10.6 on 9/18/12 so perhaps it's also able to check the metadata.

No worky here, although I get this in the Terminal and have this in the Java Prefs app:

Hmmm, might it have something to do with the XProtect blacklist written with that pesky com.oracle prefix, after all?

(I was talking about seeing if a web applet would run now in Snow.)

Ah, OK, we proved over the weekend that Snow was impacted by XProtect in Safari. I don't know whether that applies to both Safari 5.1.7 and 6.0.x, though, assuming Apple is using Safari or WebKit to enforce the rule.

I haven't been able to locate any desktop applets from a trusted source to recommend for test, so if anybody running Snow has one feel free to give it a try and let us know
