Final Cut Pro X freezing on top spec new 27" iMac, help!

I finally received my new 27" iMac today and installed all the latest updates and then the latest versions of FCPX and compressor.

Spec of new iMac:

27" Late 2012

3.4Ghz Intel i7

8GB RAM (I also added 16GB of third party RAM to the machine to take it up to 24GB RAM but remove this later)

GeForce GTX 680MX 2048MB Graphics card

1.12TB Fusion Drive (1.09TB free)

OS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion

Immediately I noticed performance issues and then it kept freezing whilst running FCPX - the whole OS would freeze resulting in me having to actually turn off the machine and turn it on again. It happened repeatedly so have done all the obvious things but still have the issue.

So far I've tried (with no luck):

- removing the third party RAM

- restarting the computer, multiple times

- making sure everything is up to date

- removing the FCPX preferences

- doing a PRAM and SMC reset

- fully uninstalling and reinstalling FCPX

- running the short and long Apple Hardware Tests (no problems found)

I am working with a large quantity of video files off an 8TB Thunderbolt drive but I've been using FCPX on my old 27" iMac and had no problems with that at all, the spec of that being far less powerful:

27" mid 2011

3.4Ghz Intel i7

8GB Ram

Radeon HD 6970M 1024MB

1TB hard drive

I'm thinking it could possibly be the graphics card or a software issue?

Any help or advice would be great!!!

Thanks!

Jon

I only installed the new OS update on my MBP. Want to wait and see what happens with this issue with Apple as the newest release does not adress the NVIDIA cards our machines use and I don't want to risk further instabilities. I now cannot use FCPX because of evertything written in this forum, but I can use Premiere Pro and all works well. My concern is if I install something new from Apple and end up messing up my current situation and lose being able to work with Premiere Pro and FCPX too then I'm in deep you know what.

For now I will adopt the stance of "If it ain't broken, don't fix it" and there is nothing in this new update that motivates me to update.

Let's wait and see.

But thanks for telling us there are new drivers....that's a good sign!

@le500: actually, it's almost okay to use FCPX now - no more crashes, not even when throwing Pixie Dust at it. So, while the issue is still with us and needs to be solved, at least you won't feel like throwing your machine out of the window every time it crashes/freezes. If you have a Time Machine back-up, I'd say there's no risk in an upgrade to 10.8.3 - and you can try FCPX as well, as long as you won't use Pixie Dust (and maybe other resembling titles/stuff).

There's still hope, sir 😉 - but you'll just have to take my word for it, as I can't say more for the time being.

@matamatario They don't do anything for FCPX users as FCPX does not take advantage of CUDA technology, but they do wonders for Premiere Pro and After Effects as they allow you to use the GPU graphics card to the fullest instead of just using RAM for previews. As for games they probably do a lot but I couldn't tell you as I have no games on my machine....sorry.

And YES I have installed them and you can find the instructions to install them here: http://www.vidmuze.com/how-to-enable-gpu-cuda-in-adobe-cs6-for-mac/

If you upgrade your iMac's OS to version 10.8.3 then YES you will likely have to install the newest drivers. I have not installed the new ones yet because I have not upgraded my iMac to 10.8.3

There is nothing that I feel necessary or absolutly needed in the new OS update 10.8.3 so I will wait a while before updating.

My machine works perfectly with 10.8.2 so until there is a good reason to change it I am staying where I am now.

I wish I could say that 10.8.3 cured my FCP problems, but the short answer is it has not. After updating to 10.8.3 on my new iMac with 680MX, I tried the two acid tests: inserting "Pixie Dust" and "Far Far Away" titles. After starting out OK, each of these lead to a system freeze of about 1-2 minutes (not a crash). Even after rendering, I notice the skimmer moves jerkily over these titles, though playback is smooth. At the time of the freezes, my system log has several notations: *** OpenGL error 0x0506 (invalid framebuffer operation) in function "GL_CHECK_CURRENT_ERROR" as well as: "Sandbox: sandboxd(8747) deny mach-lookup com.apple.coresymbolication", etc. I'm not sure what all this means, except that all is not yet well with FCP X on my iMac. I would really like to hear of others' experience after 10.8.3 update.
