GIMP - Why Can't I Access My iPhoto Library?

Mac OS X 10.7.5

Gimp 2.6.11

What The **** ? OK, I've been holding out asking this question and now I have to ask.

I'm trying to learn Gimp Image Editor because I need to do a bunch of image editing for a video for the Veterans.

When I try to bring an image in, I can't find my iPhoto Library.

Here's a screen shot.

Also, you're supposed to be able to drag in photos, but it won't let me do that either. So I have spent 4 hours today trying to figure this out and got nowhere.

I hope one of you smart guys can tell me what's going on here. Restore my faith in Mac

How can I use iPhoto for simple quick edits if I have it set in preferences to open in Gimp? I would like to be able to open my photos in iPhoto with either Gimp or iPhoto to edit

If you were to go with this setup, iPhoto and GIMP set as its external editor your workflow would look something like this:

Import images into iPhoto

Organize, set keywords, label, etc in iPhoto.

Open image in iPhoto right click image the following opens

You see you have the option to edit the image in iPhoto or in the external editor.

Make your choice and proceed.

That's going to be tricky with this set-up and it would have been nice to know this was a requirement at the beginning.

The difficulty is that you can only have one image open in the external editor at a time. To cut and paste between two images you need to have them both open in GIMP at the same time.

On images you want to do this to you will need to skip the external editor path and open both images in GIMP directly. One way and possibly the best way is to export both images to say the desktop and then open them in GIMP. Once you're done save the final image and import that into iPhoto.

I don't know how I did it, but I have it set now so that I can actually open 2 images in seperate windows and clone from one to the other. I just opened them up seperately and tried cloning and it worked. Thanks so much for all your help. The other thing i've been trying to figure out is I haven't found an easy way to adjust brush size. I did find one way, but it's like changing the pistons in the space shuttle.

Here's a pic I just did a test clone on.

Glad it's working for you now. As for GIMP related questions the GIMP site has a lot of good documentation as well as tutorials and links to GIMP related sites.

Especially if this is your first experience with an image editor like GIMP you should spend some time looking over the docs and tutorials. It is amazing what you can do with it. If you're familiar with something like Photoshop the transition shouldn't be to painful there are a lot of similarities.

Thanks so much everyone. This site is the best, and you guys are all so knowlagble. By the way, the brush sizer did start working for me, thank goodness. I haven't used Photo Shop, and this will take some learning for sure. If I can't figure something out, I'll be back here asking questions again. Thanks

Here's my most recent creation. I scaled the smaller pic upUser uploaded file
