You could email it as an attachment.
You could use Dropbox.
Do you have an iOS app installed that'll let you read pdf's on an iPad?

No, nothing other than iBooks that came with the iPad. That seems to work ok. I had forgotten how to move the pdfs from the iMac over to the ipad after updating (upgrading?) iMac to Mt. Lion. Things changed (look different) but looks like I still need to put pdf's in iTunes then sync over to iBooks in iPad.
Not sure what Dropbox (mentioned by "sig") is although I have heard of that.
I don't use it, but it's an online file storage service; don't know what else it does. Probably meant you can upload your file to there and then access it from the iPad by going to the webiste?
Dropbox has a free App for the iPad and for the Mac that will let you upload a file to the Dropbox and then go to the App on the iPad and launch it from there.
If you're interested this link for Dropbox helps me out a little bit:
That's an interesting link; are you affiliated with or getting paid by the site? (since it infers a referral)
These would be the regular way to get there:
or
The only "payment" I get is a free hundred MB or so of space. And that link was generated within the Dropbox program.
Thanks for the reply; please read the ToU (link available at the bottom of every page) - you need to provide a disclaimer at the end of your posts. Excerpt from para 6:

I've tried to move pdf files from a MacBook Pro to an iPad2 by using the suggestions in an Apple article, "iOS: About File Sharing," http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4094
However, when one gets to the part that says, "Click the Add… button, locate the file or files you want to copy from your computer, and click Choose. The selected files will be copied to the app on your iOS device immediately,"
that's where the suggestion and reality part ways. The files do NOT, in fact, transfer immediately and never.
Any suggestions, please?
Thank you,
Jay
Move pdf from imac to iPad, follow the steps:
1.Make sure you have the iBooks app installed on your iPad.
2.Open iTunes on your computer.
3.In the iTunes library, click on Books.
4.Make sure you can see your PDF via a file browser (such as Finder on Mac) or as an icon on the desktop.
5.Drag and drop the PDF into your iTunes Book library.
6.Plug your iPad into your computer and then select it in the Devices menu on iTunes.
7.Click on the Books tab within iTunes (in the bar across the top of the main frame).
8.Check the Sync Books checkbox, if it isn't already enabled.
9.Click the Apply button.
In Mavericks , there is no Books option in the iTunes library. Instead, open your pdf using iBooks.
Go to the device in iTunes, and in the books section, you will see the PDFs in your iBooks library. Now all you have to do is sync them.
You can use Airdrop pdf file sent to iPad now if you use Yosemite on Macbook and iOS8 on iPad or iPhone.
It is very easy now.
When you are asked what application you will use for the PDF file on the side iPad, you'd better to pick iBooks.
