Disable teen's phone during homework

I have an iPhone 4S and I have one for my daughter's use. Both run 6.0.1. AT&T. She texts while doing homework and misjudged how much of her study time is actually texting time. She thinks she did homework for two hours when it was actually 20 minutes and nothing is accomplished. I do not want stealth spyware. I want a way to disable her phone when she starts her homework and turn it back on when the work is done. But I want to do it from my iPhone or my MacBook. I just want to be able to say, "You are doing homework now. I'm shutting off your phone. I'll turn it back on as soon as the homework is complete." After a couple of months I hope she'll be in the habit of doing homework without texting. Hopefully she will see how much easier and faster it is when she is giving it some dedicated time. I don't want it to start and stop at certain preset times. I want to be able to just turn it on and off on demand so she can have it back when the work is done rather than at a certain time.

Thanks to everyone trying to help.

Regarding why I don't just physically take it, I want to the focus on getting the homework done without an escalation that distracts from the homework. When kids ar estill immature, they will sometimes srater a big dramatic sceene as a distraction from th etask at hand, not fully realizing it would be easier and much more productive for them to just do what they should. I don't want to grab the phone from her. I just want to say quietly, "Yes, it is off for now. You get to earn the phone privilege by getting your homework done."

The suggestions to use Find My iPhone seem like a possible solution. I asked my daughetr to put Find My iPhone on her iPhone when she got it for Christmas (got USE of it - I own it and I pay the monthly bill). I wanted her to be able to find it is sh emisplaced it. She did it right away. I also wanted it so that if she were ever in trouble while in a car with someone, we could locate her to help her.

Now I realize that for me to locate her phone with my iPhone, I have to share my iCloud with her. We had planned to have her set up iCloud on her own iTunes account so she can set all th efeatures for back-ups, etc. I don't want her apps popping onto my phone, etc. I don't want her reading my emails and texts. BUt now I think I have to put her iPhone on my iCloud if I want to locate her phone, lock it, etc. with Find My iPhone. I suppose I could set it all up and try to orchestrate who sees what. I have my son's iTouch on my iCloud so we can share an iTunes account and music etc. But every time he download an app, it lands on my iPad and iPhone.

Instead of find my phone, you can use find my friends

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-friends/id466122094?mt=8

That way you can keep your iCloud account and hers separate and private, but still track the device via your own.

The user must have the teen's Apple IDs password in order to do this. I just think it is easier to ask for the phone.

Not necessarily true. Tracking/Locking works with the iCloud account. The teen can keep iTunes and Apps tied to his/her AppleID and you can switch the iCloud account to yours.

I know, because I used this to track my teen for a period of time as a transition from grounding recently 🙂

Of course, while this change is in effect, his/her phone will get backed up to your iCloud account instead of theirs, which is not a problem unless you've filled your iCloud space.

While this is not a parenting forum, don't you think the situation will "escalate" when she finds out you have locked the phone remotely if you use Find iPhone? You will then have to give her the unlock phone EVERY time you lock it. Talk and negotiate with her and have her give you the phone (you are paying for it). I'm sure you can reach a reasonable agreement. Trying to use technology to avoid a "confrontation", IMHO ,opinion is worse.

As Micheal said, if you want to track her, use Find my Friends and you wont have to worry about getting her iMessages etc on your phone. She will need to get her own Apple ID.

Anyways, just my .02 cents. 'Nuff said.
