I can't load Apple Hardware Test on Mountain Lion

I've tried various ways of loading Apple Hardware Test on Mountain Lion as descibed by Apple:

Using a wired keyboard and with every thing else un-plugged I tried

Holding D at bootup

Option+D with WiFi on at bootup

Both ways failed.

Then I tried using my iMac's original Leopard DVD that has AHT on it. While it seems like its loading the mac dies before it actually loads !

I did that twice and both times mac died before AHT could be loaded- like some one yanked the powercord out.

How am I suppose to load AHT ?

I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion on a 2009 iMac.

The disc and drive are perfect.

When you say "only by copying the original disc" do you mean because each disc is specifically tailored for the hardware that it shipped with?

or do you mean I should copy the contents of the entire dsic to USB( rather than extratc the AHT pkg?)

If you want to make a bootable USB device from the disc, use the Restore tab in Disk Utility. Search its built-in help for the term "duplicate" to find details.
