How to import video files from Sony PD170 to FCPX

Dear Community,

I would like to know how to import video files from a Sony PD170 to FCPX. I've bought a macbook pro 13inch two days ago and have just downloaded FCPX. In the past I've worked with FCP7 but not intensively. This is also my first Mac so I'm figuring out how to install plug-ins etc. If someone could help me out, that would be very nice.

Regards,

Wessel

EDIT

Dear Tom and others who were reading this,

I've found the solution for both problems. To import files from an old camera like this one, just click import media, select the device (which needs to be on playback mode), press play on the device, the dv tape will now play on FCP X, and then hit import. The file will then import it to your event.

EDIT

Dear Tom,

Thank you for your quick response. Unfortunately it does not, but I bought the firewire cable and I've just found out how to import the files from the camera. However, a new problem appears. When I try to import the files from the camera it says "No data from device", which *****. Do you have any suggestions how to solve that?

Regards,

Wessel

I'm not sure whether you're confirming that there is no FW port or not.

I shot with this camera a while ago and my recollection is that it does have a FW (iLink) port. If that's right…

Then you need 2 adaptors – a Thunderbolt to Firewire adaptor and a FW 400 4 pin to FW800 9 pin adaptor. (Perhaps you already have the latter.)

From your description it sounds like your Mac and FCP should recognize the camera, which is encouraging. Next, you choose an event and select import media from the drop down menu.

If you start play and it reports no data, it's possible you're at the end of a tape. So hit the rewind and hopefully things will be good. If they are, you can first hit the play icon in the import window and either Import or Create Archive buttons.
