Thank you so much for your post, yes, that thermal paste was old and pasty and after wiping it clean and a trip to Radio shack for thermal paste and no more shut downs ... I would never have figured this out on my own.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!

After almost a year and a half of counless daily random shut downs, My MBP is finally cured.

HOW?

I followed a link someone posted of an article published by apple almost a year a go, inviting late 2010 mbp users to come to the apple store for a free mof charge Logiboard replacemement.

I discovered that the invitation already expired so I called the Apple center in Ireland and told them the entire story.

Luckily, after almost every crash I made sure to send Apple a report when my mac prompted me so they had it all on record.

From here on, I experienced a really amazing costumer service that almost made me forget the huge frustration I had with hundreds and hundreds of crashes.

The Irish representative told me that I can go to any Apple store in the world and have My mac repaired and LogiBoard replaced with no charge and extended the expiration date and placed a customer satisfaction code on My mac's serial number in Apple worldwidw system.

I went to the Apple store in Israel, and even though I did not believe it will work that easily- IT DID!

Within 4 days my Mac was as good as new! absolutly no crashes!

And it was all done with such gracefulness and efficiency by Apple that it reminded me why I chose to Buy their products in the first place.

So whoever experiences the same problem, try to call Apple center and have it repaired.

I have an Early 2008 15" Macbook Pro with the same problem. The mainboard was replaced so I thought the replacement mainboard was the issue but no. In order to accelerate the issue I ran Prime95 so that the CPU got nice and hot. I could jiggle the laptop and it would fail at will. BTW , since I now have a SSD in this laptop I disabled the SMS.

I reset the PRAM and SMC to no avail. I tried it with only the battery but that didn't fix it. I then removed the battery and tried with the external power supply. When the system booted it ran through the reset PRAM sequence and then booted normally. But after that the problem went away!!!

I was so convinced that the problem was hardware that I am amazed.

My macbook pro 10.6.8 shuts down randomly. This has been happening for the past 1 week. I thought it happens when my Mac gets hot or when I am watching a video and the fan works loudly. It happens despite having more than 50% charge. However today it happened even though there 88% charge and the Mac was not hot at all and I was not even working on it, it was just switched on and then suddenly it shut down. My 2008 Macbook Pro battery went bad. I bought replacement unit from Amazon, Anker $69. Battery worked fine, but after a few minutes, my Mac book Pro shutdown. This had never occurred before. With power plugged in, this did not occur. I found the new battery was loose and not secure. Returned battery and bought new battery from apple store. Issue still occurred. Macbook Pro shuts off without warning, after powering up, there is never any message about the system having been improperly shutdonw. Backed up system with time-machine and wiped mac HDD clean. Re installed maverick via apple recovery over WiFi. Plugged in time machine and recovered system. Played a movie on Netflix to rundown battery and system shutdown normally. After not using macbook Pro for a week, I turn on last night, used for about 10 minutes on battery power, system shutdown. Tried to immediately power up, nothing, had to wait a few minutes, then it turned on. Not sure what to do now. The shutdown only occurs on battery power.

Oh, one more thing, right before the very first shutdown, I had installed Battery Health app by FIBLAB Ltd.

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro, I am running Snow Leopard. The issue is a communication problem on my computer. I noticed sleep mode maybe creating the problem. It stops when I consistently restart my macbook pro. SLEEP MODE JUST CLOSING YOUR DISPLAY MAYBE THE ISSUE.

My MacBook does this with Yosemite my battery says normal so i dont know whats wrong PLEASE HELP!

I have the 2010 MBP 13' and it has been doing the random shutdowns. I replaced the hard drive as it was making noise and nothing. I took it apart and redid the thermal paste and now it is getting through the time machine restore without turning off. Working so far.

I think this is my exact issue too. My machine shuts off when it's under high load like from playing a fullscreen video. Replacing the thermal paste sounds like it could be a good fix. Thanks for the tip!
