Multiple emails and IDs in itunes

Having messed up my and my husbands iphones (all data merged and some lost!) because we only have one email and 1 Apple ID, I have now set my husband up with a new email and am about to set him up an Apple ID. Can we use just one itune account or do we need one each?

iPhone 3GS, iOS 6.0.1

In iTunes menu click edit(pc) or itunes(Mac)>preferences and choose the tab "Devices".
