One thing I have noticed is that when you Daisy Chain FW-800 drives, if they are bus powered, they tend to have more disconnects, as for some reason the bus doesn't always provide sufficient power. This tends to happen when working with large data transfers to drives which require more power (like a 7200RPM drive). If your new drive has an option to provide external power, or can be connected directly to your Mac (without any daisy chaining), then do that and see if it helps. Another thing to consider is that if it is FW-800 attached, you might want to consider trying a different cable. I use a FW-800 drive for my iTunes Library, and I've found that after a few hundred connect/disconnect sequences, that my drive will start to have this problem. If I replace the cable with a new one, then the problem goes away for a few hundred more cycles. The FW-800 cables just don't seem to handle being plugged/un-plugged a lot...
