My iphone is not updating contacts into its address book, when new entries are created on the Mac. With the old iphone I had it was straightforward.There's something I'm not doing....?

I use iCloud to sync contacts between my phone, iPad and Mac. Do you have iCloud turned on? If so you also need to set it to sync contacts. This is done in Settings.
I have activated iCloud on iphone. In iTunes I've checked all the Sync boxes I can find. But I'm still not seeing the contacts on my Mac on my phone. It shouldn't be so hard.
