Wirelessly join - but don't extend - a network?

I have a 1st generation Time Capsule, and would like it to join my existing Wireless network but I do not want it to extend it. Essentially, I want it to just be a 'passive' device that is connected to my network but I don't want it to have any part to play in broadcasting/extending it.

It is possible to do this without connecting the Time Capsule to the network via ethernet?

And afterwards (IF you succeed) you will experience what Bob meant by "SLOW", it will be so slow that you don't want to do this even if it is for "...using it to store some files that I don't need regular access to...".

Just connect the TC to a second ethernet port on the modem, and let it be a second WiFi net (use a channel not near to the one on the main WiFi network). Then for that seldom moment that you want "..using it to store some files that I don't need regular access to..", disconnect the Airport and connect it to the TC, and it will be lightning fast compared to the method you want to set up.

Curiously enough, even when I open the newer version of AirPort Utility, it sees this configuration without any issues. If I choose the Time Capsule and select Edit, here is the 'join a wireless network' option that was proving so elusive before!

Yes, I've seen that with my Express too. Bizarre, but Apple seem to have disabled it with Utility 6 (along with lots of other useful stuff).

Hi LesSchellings,

Fortunately, it is now set up exactly as I was looking for.

Thank you for your concern regarding the speed. I must admit, in just over a minute I was able to move a 687MB file across from a USB hard drive attached to my MacBook to the Time Capsule disk. (much slower than a direct ethernet connection I know, but acceptable for me).

The documents I'm storing really are needed probably only once a year, so this trade-off is acceptable for me compared to purchasing a Powerline adapter or reconnecting via ethernet.

Faster, yes, but simpler? Not in my case. For me, the simplist route is having the Time Capsule set up as I now have it - wirelessly to my network, just like any other NAS product on the market, and exactly as the older AirPort Utility allows.

Powerline adapters/ethernet/repositioning the Time Capsule to the same room as the modem/router - all those things are possible and would make it much faster, but are an unneccessary expense and an inconvenience.

I appreciate your concern however.
