I have done all of this, followoed every thread, and still when i type in someting in the url bar, it defaults to genieo. I am so angry about this!
You will get more help by starting a new thread about your problems removing the genieo adware. Do say what instructions you followed (avoid the uninstaller, since it doesn't work) and what files you found & removed, if any.
Presumably you did uninstall any new extensions in Safari & reset the default search engine.
I had to remove also the Omnibar extension in my wife's Safari 6.1.1 (even after the other stuff removal it had a Geneio voice inside it). Now everything seems to have come back to normality…
Ok...I had to walk away to cool down a bit. I followed the thread on Safemac and it worked. What I learned in the process is that Genieo support is either incompetent or intentionally misleading on this subject.

I have to agree.
This is the sure fired way to get rid of GENIEO. Please learn from users that have made this there job to fight and put an end to these malicious software and adaware developers.

Good Luck to all that need this Software Removal. A special thanks to A SAFE MAC

In Spotlight, type "genieo", select "uninstall genieo". That will finally remove it from the applications folder in finder. I had already tried to remove it from system preferences, but it didn't work.

I'm sure you mean well by posting this, but I need to point out a couple of things.
The OP had this problem over fourteen months ago, so I'm sure they no longer care.
The uninstaller you found does not totally remove Genieo and may even install up to five additional components. That means that they are still being paid for some of the advertisements that you will continue to see and I'm sure you don't want that to happen. You need to follow one of these two sets of instructions to get it completely removed:
Thanks immensely!!
dgtroy Have you eventually removed Genieo from safari? I'm an italian girl and i can't remove it, I'm desperate!
Can someone help me? Thanks!

I can't say for sure, but hundreds of others have following either of the instructions I posted earlier today:
I'm from Brazil and, like others, i've tried all... it does not worked!

Do you need help with something or do you just want us to know where you are from. You haven't given us anything to go on.
Yesterday, I downloaded Genieo accidentally and it takes over my Safari. What I did, I uninstalled the Genieo..after uninstalling it, I went to safari references, change the default search engine to yahoo. I try to search anything on the safari. If yahoo works as search engine, I went back to references and change my search engine again to google.
It works for me.

Hopefully by following one of the instructions here:
and not using the provided "Uninstall Genieo" app which leave or installs other hidden active files. Otherwise you will find shortly that it isn't really gone.
