Can't get facetime to work between two iPads?

I am going away to another country and so I tried to test facetime between mine and my boyfriends iPads both of which are iPad 2s. He has his email address and I had mine but every time we tried to call each other it was ringing from one but the other iPad just didnt respond. I have also updated the apple software to the most recent one. I then tried on my iPhone 5 and every time I pressed Facetime on Contacts it just went black for a second and then returned to contacts page. Why can't I get it working?
