Cannot send texts from iMessage to sprint users (from Verizon)

For some reason I cannot send messages via iMessage to any of my contacts who use Sprint. I'm on Verizon if that matters. I talked to an Apple Rep on the phone and they thought maybe sprint users had to have use an email address instead of a phone number, but I cannot find any such thing online.

All the rest of my contacts work fine in iMessage. Sadly my immediate family is all on Sprint. Included an image of what I get when I try (the white space is the 10-digit phone number).

iPhone 5, iOS 6.0.2

That screen shot looks like it's from a computer, not an iOS device. If so, you might get better help in one of the Mac forums.

Do these folks you're trying to message have iPhones? Do you know if they have registered their devices with iMessage? The dialog you're seeing would seem to indicate they have not,

If the person hasn't registered their email address with imessage then it won't work. They have to register their phone with their email address in order to use imessage. Try having your friends send you an imessage from their sprint phone and see it if works. BTW imessage doesn't rely on the carrier at all. It just depends on if the person set it up properly and has an email address associated with it.
