is there a cheaper alternative to iMic (vinyl rips)

for feeding audio into my ibook. want to rip some vinyl but $40 for iMic seems steep. Any alternatives that work as well that cost less?

TiPowerbook, iBook G4, Mac OS X (10.4.5)

if your stereo has RCA outs and your Titanium Powerbook has a line in (mine did, so I assume yours does too) then you can buy a "Y" cable with two RCA plugs on one end and an 1/8" TRS plug on the other. Connect the RCA plugs to the stereo and plug the 1/8" plug into your powerbook. Go to "System Preferences" make sure line-in is selected, test the input volume with the volume slider until you get a good strong signal with no clipping. Then go to GB and select line in in GB's preferences. Record.

it might cost you $6 at radio shack.

The software seals the deal for me. Finyl Vinyl, which only works with the iMic, is quite good for getting the songs in. You can record them while you are doing something else and then come back and split the file into tracks (using Finyl Vinyl).

Your TiBook is the cheapest way to get the files, as mentioned, but not the easiest. Remember that you need to split the files into tracks afterwards. If you convert the large file to an MP3 (using iTunes or something else) you can
split the file using AudioSlicer.

To send your files over to your iBook connect the two machines via Target Disk Mode and copy the files over.
