Hey Apple community,
I need some help, when I plug-in my ipod to the computer I see that it is charging but it does not show up anywhere on my computer and I've done everything the support articles have said to do. So thats my problem, HELP!!
iPod touch (3rd generation), iOS 4.2
You might want to update to iTunes 11, and iOS 6. If you are using an older iTunes with an updated iPhone it might not show up. Maybe also try using a different usb port. Hope this helped
I just noticed that your iPod touch is running iOS 4.2, that might be the problem
So you tried everything here:

Tried another cable?
Another USB port?
Have you successfully connected to the computer before?
Try another computer to help determine if you have a computer or iPod problem.
Having iOS 4.2 is not the problem in you have iTunes version 10 or later on the computer.

I looked at the article you sent and I don't have the symptoms thats there. I tried another USB port and the same thing happens, I do not have another cable to test with, I have successfully connected to a computer before, and I tried connecting to the first computer that I plugged my ipod into and the same thing happened. Well would me not using my ipod for like 6 months have anything to do with it?

With that background:
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Well it looks like i need to make a visit to the Genius Bar. It's wierd, my ipod works perfectly except for the fact that it doesn't show up on my computer, oh well.
