Focusrite Saffire Pro 40. No Sound Output Routing Available

Hi. All of a sudden my Mac Pro doesn't display the Saffire option for sound output. The Saffire appears in the input stage (Settings> Sound) and I can see that external signals are getting in (via the Focusrite mixer).

The firewire is connected fine (illuminated).

I have downloaded the latest drivers.

I have checked for available system updates (all fine there).

I have also checked that I haven't muted the outputs (just in case).

The main problem seems to be that the audio output option to route through Saffire has just gone. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

Hi Livingston_Drew,

This is a known firmware-related issue with certain Pro 40's. Please contact our tech support team via the link below and we should be able to help you resolve this.

Hi Andy,

As apollomusic says it’s worth hanging in there as once the fix is applied then you should be up and running with no further issues.

In addition: I can guess that you may be wondering why we just don’t send you the tool direct. I would be reluctant to do this as one of the requests that Focusrite asks of you is a full System specification. This may lead to a slightly different Unix command set being suggested during the fix phase... and I, and I’m sure all other participants in this discussion, would hate to be the source of any permanent damage to your device by simply issuing the repair script that we were given.

Good luck - let us know how you get on.

Hi Andy,

Did anyone at Focusrite reply to you with the DiceTool fix? I am having the exact same issue, and have been waiting over a week for an email with the .zip and the instructions. So far I have had no response. I bought the Saffire Pro 40 last month, and I have the latest drivers as well. I believe I didn't have this issue until I got the latest drivers but I can't confirm that. There should be a better way to get this fix quickly, possibly with online support. I have called the California office as well but was only able to leave a message. @Livingston_Drew - how long did it take for you to get a fix? Thanks.

Hi apollomusic,

I was sent the DiceTool1.zip with the pdf instructions. I have had what appear to be the same exact issues as everyone in this post, but when I run ./dice bi I see that all ins/outs are recognized. I'm wondering - did you see 0 ins/outs or just ran the DiceTool anyway to fix the issue. I was hoping for 0 ins/outs to continue, but maybe there is another issue (though like I said I am having the same symptoms as Livingston_Drew. I am on a Macbook Pro Mid-2009, MixControl v3.1. I haven't executed the dicetool fix as of yet until I can confirm what is happening.

UPDATE: Thanks to Matt from Focusrite in CA. My issue seemed similar to this but was not, as I was still seeing all my ins/out as stated above. The Saffire Pro 40 was also working fine if I rebooted (usually several times). I was having a Computer Sleep issue (on my MacBook Pro 13" Mid-2009, running OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard) with some kind of disk permissions issue. The answer was to move the slider under System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Computer Sleep to "Never". Then go to Applications -> Utilities -> open Disk Utility, click Macintosh HD and click "Repair Disk Permissions" under the tab "First Aid". If you think you are having the issue based on the topic in this thread, contact Support for the fix and run DiceTool. The pdf will tell you to first run the command "./dice bi". If you see all your ins/outs DO NOT run the next command to delete the firmware sector and instead try the fix in this reply. If you aren't sure if it is either issue call Focusrite in CA (on their site). Their Customer Service was great. I will definitely continue to buy from Focusrite!

Hey Drew,

So I've posted a few questions and responses and maybe I spoke too soon. The 'fix' Focusrite support had me try actually didn't work, though it appeared it had. Basically I'm still getting the issue, but I have found the exact sequence to replicate it every time. If I connect the Saffire by FW, start it up, then the macbook pro after having use the macbook's built-in audio (for anything), I get no sound output. It seems like if I restart the mac a couple ( I think at least twice), the Saffire is recognised and I can get audio out through it. So once it IS working, I tested it by shutting the Saffire down, disconnecting and using anything, ie. iTunes through the built-in output which automatically activates. Now, I shut down the mac. I connect the FW, start the Saffire, then the macbook and as predicted no output through the Saffire. I remembered you saying something in this thread about messing with the Sample Rate setting in MixControl (3.1). So I opened it up, flipped it from 48 to 44.1 and viola!, the output through the Saffire is working. I can repeat this experiment over and over. My question to you is, when you ran the DiceTool fix, did it show 0 ins/outs before you proceded to update the firmware? I still show all the ins/outs. It seems like you had the same issue as I do now, and the DiceTool fixed it. Possibly mine is slightly different. The Focusrite tech seemed to think my issue was different, but like I said the fix we went through didn't work. I'm thinking there is an issue with MixControl 3.1 an dmy slightly older MAcBook Pro (Mid-2009, OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard). Not sure. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

First off, thanks to Focusrite (Michael and Matt) out in CA. The customer service out there is great. Pedro, quick question - what year/model/OSX version are you running? I am on a MacBook Pro Mid-2009 running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I thought I had the same issue in this original post, but when I ran the DiceTool all the ins/outs were displayed in Terminal. For me, there seems to be an issue for me with Mix Control 3.1 and my older mac. If you do get the DiceTool, and after running the command to check the ins/outs you see that they are detected don't run the tool to erase the firmware sector. First power everything up, start iTunes, try to play a song and verify that it won't play. Then open MixControl, flip the Sync setting to 44.1 from 48. This is the workaround for me right now. It isn't optimal, but I don't have to shutdown and restart the whole set up. Just reset the clock. I am actually going to try an older version of MixControl at some point, and I'll let you know if that fixes my problem. Don't do anything though without contacting Focusrite support.

Hi Pedro Tie: First of all - Apologies for the delay in responding.

I can only reiterate the advice from TheEtherInc and that is to contact Focusrite and seek their guidance and support in resolving your issue (although it may be frustrating waiting it's worth it as these guys are good and really do work towards addressing your specific issues).
