MacBook Pro Retina Fan Issues

I too have the same fan issue and have two days left on my 14 day return. I can't see that it can be anything other than a firmware or software problem. I first noticed it when downloading larger apps from the App Store. Normally the fans stay at idle speed for most everything else. I tried calling Apple and talked with a rep. and was told he knew nothing about this very common problem. I'll wait for a firmware or software patch.

Returned and got new one -- same problem. Counter is now 2, will touch base in 2 weeks

I hope to get my 15 inch MacBook Retina on monday. Looking forward to see what happens with the fans.

about your fan issue,

there is a program called smcFanControl, it controls and changes your computer's fan speed either fast or slow. i use it and its very helpful but i haven't noticed your problem on my mac. you can download in for free from

That program won't help, it just set a minimum fan speed, the only program that helps is ultrafan, it's a bit buggy, but it helps your fans to not kick in as much.

I would not recommed using these programs that alter your fan speeds. Although it is unlikely that you will damage your hardware, there is still some chance. And of course, it will void your warranty.

I have the same configuration. I'm on my second one and it's the same crap with the fans coming on randomly and sometimes very frequently while under minimal stress and heat.

I'm very dissapointed and apple care didnt have an answer, neither did the apple store.

Apple is blowing it. Come on guys. For 3K I should not have to fix my computer straight out of the box.

I've went through several pages of this thread, but not all of them.

Sorry if this question has allready been asked.

Did anyone tried to force the Integrated GPU with gfxCardStatus Software?

I've been uning everyday my MBPr for 9 months, even playing 3D games in Windows over Parallels and other consuming tasks.

The only time when I see the fans running fast is when I'm coding movies (due to the 95 % of CPU usage) and also when the NVIDIA graphic card is enabled and at the same time any application require some consuming GPU work.

Actually, navigating throug some pages (like youtube) unsing Chrome or Firefox may activate the NVIDIA and you won't even notice it. Even if you close the tab, the NVIDIA will ve active until you close the browser.

I think it would worth to try force the Integrated.

Maybe the temperature you see in Istat is the HD 4000 but not the NVIDIA. That would explain why we don't see anything hot in Istat.

2.7GHz i7, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD - same fan issue...

Same problem here. I've already checked my HDD is Sandisk 512GB SSD.

+1 Same issue, brand new 15" MBPr with Sandisk.

I also am experiencing the same issue. I bought a mid 2012 rmbp (2.3ghz 16gb) early January with non of this fan problem. The newer version came out a few weeks after and I was able to exchange for a early 2013 model (2.4ghz 16gb Apple 256 SSD). First thing I noticed was the fan going off for no particular reason. The first time the fan came on, I thought someone was cutting the lawn outside, but it was actually the fans in the computer!

Hopefully Apple will come up with a solution soon!

I too had the fan spin up so soon after the first time I booted the computer I thought it was something else.

Immediately racing up to full speed it was so loud, initially I was in complete disbelief.

Sadly what it proves is Apple failed to test any of these or they would have noticed it.

Now that's its become a frequent occurrence daily, it's become the most annoying Mac I've ever had.

I got the same fan problem, in addition to an unexpected restart. Waiting for the solution. Do you guys meet the restart problem? Sort of unreliable new model.
