MacBook Pro Retina Fan Issues

Have you stopped using torrent programs altogether then? I'm also using Transmission and find that when it's not in use, I don't have weird fan spikes. Which torrent program are you using instead?

Just had the fan spike after a wake up from sleep and while I was watching a video in the Browser.

This is also happening with my MacBook Pro 15" Retina (2013 version). Resetting the PRAM and SMC didn't make a difference, nor did doing a complete reinstall.

I took it to the Genius Bar, but it passed all their tests (including the fan test) so they were not sure what to do. If they took it in for repair but couldn't fix it, I was told I wouldn't be able to return it because that would then be after the 14 day return policy.

So I've returned the whole order and requested a refund. I will keep an eye on the issue and consider buying a new MacBook if/when Apple have dealt with this problem.

Actually, last night my fans spiked even without the torrent program running this time. Though it only happened once for the whole 2-3 hours I was using it, whereas it would spike frequently when the torrent program is running.

My main question is, what are the consequences of having the fans spike frequently like this? Is it just annoyance? Or will it actually lead to shortened lifespan of some component(s)? Anyone know?

It's pretty evident that Apple needs to put out another firmware update. As I type this…… my fans are kickin on FULL blast

— only apps running

- Safari (not even a window open)

- Mail (full screen)

- Calendar (full screen)

- iMessage

- iTunes (not even playing a song)

- Activity Monitor

- Steam (no game running)

Just finished typing all the above and the fans have now shut down.

Here's a screenshot of my experience. When I caught it, the fans were at 4353 RPM, but it had been higher.

I was considering taking advantage of the 14 day return policy (have 9 days left) but if I get another, there's no guarantee it won't have the same problem. Worse, it may have an LG screen instead of a Samsung. I guess there's always the option of getting a Windows computer instead...

Yes it is. I paid 2500$ for my Macbook Pro Retina and I expect it work without annoying me.

I would recommend you to wait. Apple will hopefully fix this problem with a firmware update.

I don't think it's hardware. Question is: do you know someone with a MBP Retina 2013 with a sandisk who don't have the problem?

Maybe we should also tell our story to some specialized websites?

Had a mid 2012 rMBP 16gb. Traded it in because of the refresh.

Bought the early 2013 rMBP 8gb. Same issue as everyone here. My fan kept going off at odd times, even when all I was running was MS Words, and safari. It would last for about 15-30 seconds.

Brought it into the Apple store today and the tech ran through all the tests and nothing showed up. They wanted to keep the machine to make sure it's a hardware issue, I refused cause I need my laptop so I told them I'll just trade it in for a new one (still in my 14 days period)

Came home, set it up and now I'm experiencing the same issue. Fan is going off again. This happen every 30 minutes ish.

At first I thought it has to do with the ram. I had 16gb on the other machine and didn't hear the fan once. This machine chews up almost 7gb of ram with just normal processing (no photoshop, no editing, no flash, etc...) Anyone else think this may be the cause?
