10 megabytes per second downloading from microsoft bizspark (5 3-4GB ISO images downloading in parallel, each going at 1,995-2,005 KB/sec -- KB not Kb, as I am using a business 100Mb/100Mb line) triggers a very dull whirr but not the banshee.
I will try testing with NAS once the downloads finish (looks like another 45 mins). @john500y2k do you have a rough idea of the data written/sec during that time? It's oscillating but the RMS appears to be 9 MB/sec.
Ok it randomly triggered again with no spike in CPU(!) with the ssd temp sensor reporting 39C (roughly 30 minutes, saturating at 10MB/sec). I dont think I can reproduce it in the apple store (due to the internet speed there) but at least I have enough to tell them that their recommended fixes didnt resolve the issue.
I can reproduce it every time if I have the Safari Extension ClickToFlash installed and enabled. With that plugin installed it disables Flash in websites and you have to click on the Flash frame to enable that flash content, so it saves battery life. But it also automatically forces YouTube to show HTML5 versions of there videos instead of Flash versions.
It is these HTML5 videos on YouTube that cause my fans to spin up to full speed every time as long as the video is about 5 minutes long, by about the 2 minute mark the fans will spin up. At no time while watching a video even 1 hour long do any of the temperatures get high enough to warrant the high fan speed, it is completely unrelated to heat produced.
Strangely if I remove Flash and force HTML5 playback in a different way, by enabling Developer mode in Safari and then change the User Agent mode to make Safari report that its an iPad rather than a Macbook, the fans do not speed up to maximum, they work perfectly normal and respond to heat levels the way they are supposed to do.

I tried it twice and was able to reproduce the issue both times using your first formula, assuming that I started from a resting state. In any circumstance where I was saturating the connection, I could not elicit the response.
One thing I noticed was that disk access pattern was very strange: according to the (admittedly small) disk activity view, every time the fan picked up the read/written data both spiked to 10MB/sec.
I also was unable to elicit the response your way if I turned off "Put hard disks to sleep when possible".
Are there any other simple variables to check?
There is another one method how to reproduce an issue.
Add new mail account with amount of messages in Mail.app (for me it was 2 accs on gmail).
After some time Mail starts to download all messages (as i suppose to some local folder)
Network speed for incoming data was about 1-3 Mbit and it was from imap.gmail.com.
End every 15 minutes fan speed was up to 6000 rpm!
I have a lot of messages on gmail, so it took about two nights to sync all of them.
After all messages was downloaded - fan issue disappeared.
All day long fans was silent.
Then I've tried to add one more gmail account - and problem has appeared again.
Also when I used Transmission to download 9Gb movie with 9Mbit speed - it was silent.
Fans was silent when listening music in ITunes and copying files.
I think that if it wasn't Mail.app I haven't noticed a problem.
And i'm expirence the same thing - 14 day to bring it back, or to wait some software fix...
There is no answer yet, only suspicion to SSD
The "turning off flash" issue actually stems from a TWC/RR throttling issue with certain CDNs that youtube uses. After running
$ sudo ipfw add reject src-ip 184.108.40.206/24 in
$ sudo ipfw add reject src-ip 220.127.116.11/16 in
long youtube videos also triggered the problem within google chrome. This also points to an SSD-related issue causing the problems.
BTW: Is there a restocking fee for returning or asking for a replacement unit (without having to ship out for repairs)?
It doesn't really matter whether its Flash causing the problem or not, the most important thing is to be able to easily reproduce the fan problem again and again, and I can using this method without fail.
And the point of my previous post was that Flash wasn't actually been used, HTML5 was which has nothing at all to do with Flash, understand?
