Q: MacBook Pro Retina Fan Issues

Hi,

I bought a macBook Pro Retina just under a month ago, and have been experiencing some issues with the fan speeds.

I can be just browsing the web or checking emails or playing music through iTunes, and the fans will spin up to full speed for a minute or so, and then return to normal.

I have reset the SMC, the PRAM and repaired the Disk and Disk Permissions, with no luck, I've also tried a full format and reinstall with no luck either.

I have seen that others have been experiencing similar issues, and wanted to get some advice on where I can go from here.

Attached below is a Screen Grab of my temps and fan speeds. The fans were at normal speed for a few minutes, then went up to a high speed, back down and then back up again, and kept repeating.

Thanks in advance,

James.

This song kick your fan up because it's a Apple LossLess format.

That's not a correct behavior. Call the Apple Customer support and tell them about your problem, mention this topic and the others case numbers.

    Thanks !

If this was correct behaviour this 21 page thread wouldn't be 21 pages long, it would be a couple of posts long with one of them saying, yes this is normal, lol. To clarify no its not normal and nobody knows for sure if the fix is as easy as a firmware update. I know in the past when I had to update firmware on an SSD in a PC the act of updating the firmware resulted in the loss of all data on the drive, lets hope that's not necessary for the SanDisk drives.

I can also confirm that I have the same issue when I play the song with iTunes. The specs of my MBP are:

    Early 2013 15" MBP Retina i7 16GB APPLE SSD SD512E Media

However, if I play this song with VLC media player, I cannot reproduce this issue. This seems quite interesting to me.

I have not yet contacted support about this but I will do it later.

I think it will lose everything, but that's no issue... Everybody should using Time Machine.. If you're coming to a Apple Store to let your Macbook repair and you haven't got a backup, they laugh...

Thank you for contacting Apple.  Don't hesitate to contact me by replying to this email or calling my voicemail number (shown below), should you have any further questions or concerns about this issue.

As the case has been escalated to a Senior Advisor, I'll be handling this case personally until it is resolved.  Please don't hesitate to direct your questions and concerns about this issue to me.

    Sincerely,

    Jett Cornelius

He claimed I was the first person to tell him about the issue.  We need to make sure that many people at applecare know about this, and the only way we can do that is to call them multiple times and have them "escalate" the issue (and keep track)

In my case, the symptoms are exactly the same for each Apple Lossless song I played.

That shouldn't have had an effect.  Nothing short of an SMC update would address the problem (that, or replacing the SSDs).

Im tempted to return the machine next week and just ride the return curve until they fix it

Same issue, on a laptop that is specifically going to be used to record acoustic music. 16G, 512 Flash. First mac I've ever bought. I'm only running Firefox and it's happened four or five times in 20 minutes. I can't imagine what running Logic will do. I'm still very excited to get recording but you can imagine my concern.

Just got the call from Apple.

They told me they are now aware of the problem (thanks to this topic and my video) and they are working on it with their engineering team. He told me this problem is taken seriously by the executives at Apple.

However, he did not mention any delay for solving this problem or that a software update might solve the problem.

    Now, let's wait...

    Hi All,

How many non sandisk units have we had reported that do not have the problem? It seems that I am hearing they will only ship with sandisk, so there is no point returning it. Which begs the question if all the units we are testing have sandidsk drives what are we proving? we need to find more / some people who have samsung units to test / prove the theory.

Another concern I have is there any other impact on the system if it is the SSD. Could there be any other related issues? does it impact throughput from the SSD when fans are high, what 'state' does the drive think it is in?

"They told me they are now aware of the problem"

That's not good enough -- many of us were told that exact phrase.  We need to continue pushing

Hey Daak, that about the last thing you want when you're going to be recording audio, having a laptop fan kick in at the worst time... You may have to isolate your unit until it's sorted

I know but now they need to work to find a solution and we need to give them some time. At least, we know they are working on it.

The guy told me also that if we find anything interesting to solve this problem, I must send him an email.
