Q: MacBook Pro Retina Fan Issues

Hi,

I bought a macBook Pro Retina just under a month ago, and have been experiencing some issues with the fan speeds.

I can be just browsing the web or checking emails or playing music through iTunes, and the fans will spin up to full speed for a minute or so, and then return to normal.

I have reset the SMC, the PRAM and repaired the Disk and Disk Permissions, with no luck, I've also tried a full format and reinstall with no luck either.

I have seen that others have been experiencing similar issues, and wanted to get some advice on where I can go from here.

Attached below is a Screen Grab of my temps and fan speeds. The fans were at normal speed for a few minutes, then went up to a high speed, back down and then back up again, and kept repeating.

Thanks in advance,

James.

Thanks Oyinko2 for your diligent reporting, keeping us up to date.

Another thought to share, in the engineering lab I work in there are 6...15" MBP retina's, none of which have this issue. So while that is but a very small sampling, it is thought provoking.

I will wait patiently, placing my faith in Apple. Let's hope they do the right thing and get this resolved as soon as possible.

Of course! It's too bad I didn't stumble across this forum when doing research for the laptop. I can't believe this could be a problem with the latest model, and with so many people switching not only to apple but to apple laptops to do professional home recording I'm surprised I didn't hear about this. I'm remaining optimistic but I'm very concerned, let me tell say for people who aren't experiencing this when we say the fan is loud we mean it is disconcertingly loud.

They already know the SSD could (must) be the problem?

The most we can do is return and wait.  I plan on returning next week (not yet 14 days)

Do they have the SD512E hard drives?

Oops... wrote that is haste. Yes they all have Samsung SSD's.

Myself and four other engineers have SanDisk SSD's.

I came in early with permission to test theirs and each one displays the fan speed spike when playing the song and at other random times, just like we all seem to be experiencing.

To those of you who are within 14 days, I would return it for a refund. But that's just my thoughts NOT a suggestion. If I could, I would be thrilled to return mine and wait for the next gen.

So I decided not to even buy logic before I played around with the computer a bit and saw what the fan issue was like. I tried recording a single track through garage band using the computer microphone (i.e. the most bare bones software with nothing hard for the computer to process) and thirty seconds into the recording the fans literally drown out the acoustic guitar. I'll be taking the computer in tomorrow for a refund or to see if I can exchange it for... what? An earlier retina model? This is absurd.

Just for anyone concerned that this is an issue related to anything other than the SSD. I can confirm, that having just bought and fitted a 512GB Sandisk SSD into my 2.3 GHz retina MBP, previously fitted with the 256GB Samsung branded model, this issue has occurred three times in the past day, where previously it had occurred on zero occasions in six months.

I am positive, if anyone wasn't convinced already, that this is purely an issue stemming from the Sandisk model of SSD.

What other models are shipping with the sandisk SSD? could it affect non retina models? Air?

In my opinion, We need to inform as much as possible the various blogs and magazines specialized in apple products about this issue, so as to give greater emphasis to the problem.

I can contact blogs in Italy, it would be nice if all the blogs in the world gave prominence to this problem, Apple would take little to solve it.

    Peppie55: you tested what?

The radio? Yeah I don't think streaming causes me any issues.
