Q: MacBook Pro Retina Fan Issues

Hi,

I bought a macBook Pro Retina just under a month ago, and have been experiencing some issues with the fan speeds.

I can be just browsing the web or checking emails or playing music through iTunes, and the fans will spin up to full speed for a minute or so, and then return to normal.

I have reset the SMC, the PRAM and repaired the Disk and Disk Permissions, with no luck, I've also tried a full format and reinstall with no luck either.

I have seen that others have been experiencing similar issues, and wanted to get some advice on where I can go from here.

Attached below is a Screen Grab of my temps and fan speeds. The fans were at normal speed for a few minutes, then went up to a high speed, back down and then back up again, and kept repeating.

Thanks in advance,

James.

    Hi,

regarding print magazines and telling them about the issue (and how Apple threats it): I've contacted c't in Germany (ct@heise.de) a couple of days ago as they are usually pretty sensitive and rigorous when it comes to customer care. I got no reply yet but am optimistic that they will report on it sooner or later.

    Just FYI

I just finished my call with Apple support. The support person said that he had not heard about this issue before and suggested that I should reset NVRAM and SMC. When I told him that I had already done this before calling to support, he finally transferred my case to a technical support person.

I guess now all I can do is to hope that Apple solves this problem.

    Hi Guys,

I do wonder if all of you have iStat pro installed when you have this issue?

Doesn't matter, I reïnstalled the OS and just put 1 Apple LossLess audio file on my macbook. When I played it in iTunes, the fans start to kick in.

    Hi there,

    I have the same issue.

    Early 2013, 16GB, 2,4 GHZ, 256GB SanDisk SSD

Although the fans don't kick off every time I play the lossless file I'm pretty sure that I have the same problem as you guys. I've played it three times by now and the issue came up only once. I did the SMC rest a few minutes ago and since then everything is ok but I'm very sure the evil noise will return...

By the way, this is already my third model and with this one I passed past the 14 days because I used the 2nd model until it was picked up by TNT while the new one (this one) was already delivered.

The first one made a weird voice when opening/closing the lid.

The second one had the fan issue.

The third one is the first 2013 model and it's obviously also concerned by the fan issue.

Hate this. Just want to have a normal machine, finally set it up with all of my stuff and have some piece.

Lets hope this can get addressed ASAP and end all our frustrations.

I bought a 15-inch Macbook Pro: 2.7GHz with Retina display in February 2013 and since date of purchase, I have been experiencing fan revving at all times, including when the Macbook Pro is idle.  From https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4735947 others are experiencing the same issue and the Apple client community has formally communicated and received ticket numbers.

It appears from the correspondence on this site, that there is no action steps from Apple and Apple Customer Service Representatives are not aware of this known issue.

I am very surprised in the lack of communication and lack of action plan/steps from Apple.  When spending over $3k, expectation for Apple value is immediate fix or urgency. Has the death of Jobs deteriorated Apple client centricity?

What you are saying is wrong and please let's stop talk about Steve Jobs death when something is wrong with a product!

I got a call from Apple yesterday. They told me they are now aware of the problem and are working on it to solve it.

Not let's give them some time to find a solution and push a SMC update.

we can not sell high-end machines and telling people to wait to be finalizing the product!!!!

this must be done before marketing

Also, what is this going to do to the Fans and its related components' durability... Certainly not as it should be!  I've decided to return mine until this gets resolved.  The fans to my current unit probably ran its life cycle because it's on 24/7, almost!  Sounds like the rubber-bands about snap!  Makes me nervous...

Apple! You are like my concubine's child.  Want to Like u but I just can't right now :(

Yes, nobody shold release hardware or software until it's 100% perfect.  Enjoy that model because you'll have nothing.

The MBP still works.  Unless you're in a studio environemnt where the noise might cause trouble, I think some of the replies here are over the top.
And FWIW, those fans can spin for decades without breaking.  They'll likely be the last component to break.  If you're not happy, it's your right to return it.  But I think some need to relax a bit.  I spent the same $3100+ on mine...
