Q: MacBook Pro Retina Fan Issues

Hi,

I bought a macBook Pro Retina just under a month ago, and have been experiencing some issues with the fan speeds.

I can be just browsing the web or checking emails or playing music through iTunes, and the fans will spin up to full speed for a minute or so, and then return to normal.

I have reset the SMC, the PRAM and repaired the Disk and Disk Permissions, with no luck, I've also tried a full format and reinstall with no luck either.

I have seen that others have been experiencing similar issues, and wanted to get some advice on where I can go from here.

Attached below is a Screen Grab of my temps and fan speeds. The fans were at normal speed for a few minutes, then went up to a high speed, back down and then back up again, and kept repeating.

Thanks in advance,

James.

happens every few min when I use unison application.

    Safari, twice now

copying data from ext HDD, yes fan kicks in for a few seconds on large files.

copying large data to my NAS via LAN or wifi

    playing that song via itunes.

mind you my CPU and GPU temps are always low 32-42C when the fan kicks in.

ive had my macbook now for 3 weeks.

Personally with my Workflow its not that much of a problem as it doesn't happen that often. I have a few assured ways to replicate the issue, one is playing that song in iTunes (doesn't do it when played in DJAY) and another is having the extension "ClickToFlash" installed in Safari, then go to Youtube and watch any video that is more than 2 minutes long.

ClickToFlash forces Youtube to supply a HTML5 version of the videos you play and it is those HTML5 videos that also cause my fans to ramp up to full speed. If I disable the extension in Safari and play the Flash versions of the exact same video the fans behave in the normal way and do not spin up to full speed.

Another way I can get it to happen is to run a restore of my iPad3 or iPhone 4s with iTunes, that sets it off.

Using a thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter to my PC to transfer more than a couple of Gig of files also triggers the fault too.

I am not aware of that anyone reported that the problem persists when replacing the SanDisk with a Samsung SSD

What the point of swapping the Drive or any other component for that matter, you just confirmed it yourself that it doesn't fix the problem!!

    Capacity: 500.28 GB (500,277,790,720 bytes)

    Model: APPLE SSD SD512E

    Revision: 1027AP

Has happened three times now, once while checking with the song from the previous post. Got it two days ago and the problem started about 3 hours ago. Is it worthwile just getting apple to upgrade it to a samsung 768?

I explained a few pages back that I'd swapped a Samsung 256 for the sandisk 512. Problem confirmed on mine.

Never had any spin ups in 6 months of ownership with the Samsung model SSD.

-ailand-, In the first message you wrote:

If you replace the drive with a Samsung or OWC, the problem persist.

The problem persist also if apple swaps your laptop with a new one.

    The second one:

I'm waiting apple to swap my one.

I am not sure why do you need swap ssd if problem presist?

He was saying that the problem only happened with the sandisk, with the samsung he did not have the problem in 6 months. Therefore, swapping the sandisk for a samsung apparently would fix the problem.

You asked me where I got the info about the swap drive doesn't work.

I posted the original post where NutsNGum explain it.

There is another post that explains after a machine swap, the problem still persist.

I'm also waiting the swap of mine MBPR

    Sorry for confusion.

I'm on my 3rd retina. I exchanged it twice today, and the third time i went straight into downloading the music file to try it out. All 3 have had 256GB sandisks ssds and the fans really do go nuts. Every 10mins or so. It seriously sounds like rain is pouring outside.  Eurgh, it's embarassing when it goes off in class.

You REALLY have to read and UNDERSTAND what NutsNGum was saying...

They were saying they only had the problem with a Sandisk SSD and not with a Samsung SSD.

Just for anyone concerned that this is an issue related to anything other than the SSD. I can confirm, that having just bought and fitted a 512GB Sandisk SSD into my 2.3 GHz retina MBP, previously fitted with the 256GB Samsung branded model, this issue has occurred three times in the past day, where previously it had occurred on zero occasions in six months.

I am positive, if anyone wasn't convinced already, that this is purely an issue stemming from the Sandisk model of SSD.
