Q: MacBook Pro Retina Fan Issues

I got the i7 processor 13 inch model with 512 SSD.

My hard drive is a samsung.  however, i do not know what my display panel is .. i tried using the command line script posted on these forums but i believe apple removed this command script from the new units so i am unable to tell whether it is a Samsung or LG display....

does anyone know how to figure that out?

Given that we are talking about 15" retina MBP, I highly doubt a 13" retina MBA would change people's minds.

Just to add to the mix.  Today (Mar 20) did the 10.8.3 update from 10.8.2 and all of a sudden the fan won't stop. I have a Macbook Pro 5,1 (Bought in 2009).  I've been running top and can't see that anything is more than 10% CPU.  I've only ever heard the fan when it the MBP was doing a video encode or compile some code.

This is nuts.  Why would a system update cause the fan to run continuously???

So I suspect this isn't a retina problem but a general MBP problem???

I think you need a SMC reset.

I already did an SMC reset.  It hasn't helped at all.   It does get quiter and louder.  When at it's loudest it sounds like a jet taking off.  This is ridiculous.

Make a backup (time machine) and do a clean install?

Yes, perhaps when all else fails, do a clean install. 

But that will mean I lose a day of work that I can't afford to do right now.  This isn't what is supposed to happen when using an MBP.

Reminds me of how I used to do Windows updates.  Back up user files, wipe the disk, install from disks, run all updates, install all programs, update all programs, copy back user files.  Time to complete ... 1 day +.  :-(

Think different??  Sound like the same now.

@Nuke have you tried booting from a linux live cd (say, ubuntu)?  Does the fan go off?

I'd advise to just enjoy your new Mac.

The update issued, which is included with the 10.8.3 update, fixed the fan issue for me and everyone (over twenty) at the lab I work at.

We have both LG & Samsung displays in the last 40 or so MBPr's we just received in the last week and they are all just fine. They get used really hard for intense engineering design work, so if anything's going to show up it usually does in just a few days in our environment.

Hi nonchalance.  Nice screen name!

I took your advice and rebooted with SystemRescueCD and enjoyed the sound of silence.  Once the CD stopped spinning there was no sound ...

And wouldn't you know it.  When I shutdown and rebooted the Mac seems to be back to quiet again.  (Huh, what could have changed???)

So I'm not sure what happened here but I haven't heard the fan in 15-30 minutes.  Like old times!

Thanks for your suggestion.  It seems to have fixed whatever was stuck/screwed up.

I just wanted to thank everyone who has posted in this thread- I've been following it ever since I decided to purchase a retina macbook pro and as soon as you guys announced that the fan issue had been resolved, I ordered mine

I received it today; It's base model except upgraded to 16 gigs of ram.  This is my first macbook- I use a mac mini at work- and I feel a little silly, but if I go to About This Mac, it says I have OS X Version 10.8.2, but if I go to software updates, it says there are none available.  I haven't experienced any fan issues thus far but I want to avoid it.. am I missing something?  Even if I check for updates it doesn't come up with 10.8.3.

15", sorry and thanks! So far no issues but it still seems strange that I don't see the software update.  I haven't done anything too intensive yet though, just installing applications.

Totally blown away by this machine though.  On my home PC it took a few minutes to reboot and on this it takes literally 20s, and about 5s to open Photoshop.  Amazing!

That's fast because of their using SSD. SSD can read/write up to 400MB+ .

Try to open software update then they will appear.
