My iPod is taking hours to sync? Help!

It keeps getting stuck on step 3: syncing music to ipod, then the progress on the bar gets to nearly done but then it just stays there and will not finish syncing.... its a 3rd gen ipod touch but i've never had any problems with it up til now... thanks
