I also had the problem of my mbp shutting down, so I went to the apple store at woodfield in schaumburg, IL and they took a look at it. They found out that I needed a new battery but they didnt have any in stock so they ordered one and it should be in in a few days. The genius i had didnt seem to know about the problem but another one did, so thats why i got "priority" shipping for the battery. If you have an active applecare warenty (not phone) it is free. Hope this helps

i stumbled upon this topic about a week ago because i was having problems with my battery not charging to 100% - that issue resovled itself however once i read many of the posts in this topic i became somewhat paranoid about the battery bulging out and such. Sure enough two days ago i noticed about a 2mm bulge from the middle. I called the support and the guy i was speaking with had no idea of what i was talking about and then when I asked him what to do he said that he didn't know and that he would call back. he calls back and consulted with others and said this was the first they had heard about the problem. i directed him to this discussion where he said that because the battery wasn't popping out as some of the others he didn't want to give me a new battery! I would take it straight to an apple store except i am not at home and the closest one to me is the one I would normally go to.

i am a first time mac computer user and i must say i am frustrated by this...other than the battery, i would have no complaints!

There's really no need for questions or discussion about this. It's a very simple thing. 😉

1) Everyone with a MacBook Pro is still under hardware warranty, since all new Macs come with a one-year hardware warranty and the MBP has only been in existence for a few months.

2) If your battery is bulging or in any way malformed, and it wasn't caused by some form of accident, you have a hardware defect.

3) Therefore, anyone with a battery that is bulging or in any way physically deformed (again, not caused by accident or abuse) is covered under the MacBook Pro's one year hardware warranty. Call Apple Support, be polite, explain the problem, and if you aren't told that your battery will be replaced, ask to speak to a supervisor or to Apple Customer Relations. Remain polite and calm, but be firm: you have a hardware defect and your warranty will cover it.

A replacement battery can be provided by a retail Apple Store or by the support people who you call at AppleCare.

just got off the phone to Apple Care.

I have the swollen battery problem with random shut downs.

I told him about this forum, he checked it out, put me on hold, then said they'd send me a new battery, they'd had a series of batteries with this problem.

This will be my third battery, hopefully third time lucky.

I'm having to run my comp off AC, trying not to knock it out.....

Just to register.

Apple already knows that MBP's with serial numbers under W8608 have this battery swollen problem.
My MBP is one of the series W8613 and have the very same problem, so if you have the same problem, you are not alone 😉.
My situation is even worst because I am in Brazil and we don't have AppleCare here :((.
This way I need to call apple brazil, be treated as a dumb person and get tired of asking for a new battery before someone can actually solve my problem.

I am very disapointed with all this new mac stuff.

Spin Down is synonymous for powering down. There is no such thing as a "lower power consumption state" for IDE/ATA/SATA drives.

The drives stop spinning. The RAM remains powered in most cases, although
on the Intel Portables, a RAM->Disk file is sometimes created and under some
circumstances, it seems to dump the RAM power and restore from disk on wake. I haven't found a reliable source for how this determination is made.

I have a W8624 MBP with a swollen battery. I was also experiencing the other
symptoms listed (erratic track pad behavior, sudden shutdowns if not on AC.

Mine does tend to run what I would consider unusually hot, and, I think it tends to run Hotter than other MBP 17s I've seen. I'm guessing Apple will want me to try the Battery swap first, but, if I have a second battery go tits-up, I'm going to insist they swap the machine.
