What are good mastering plugins?

I was wondering if anyone uses 3rd party plugins in Logic for the end mix and mastering. I work with orchestral scores and always have problems in getting realisting end mixes. Are there 3rd party plugins that could help me?

Mastering is quite an expert skill - particularly when it comes to orchestral material. Many mastering engineers are far more reasonable than you might imagine. It's worth finding a good one - you may well learn a lot from their feedback (& get better results than you would on your own).

Plug-in wise I'd take a look at the Sonnox Limiter - it's very versatile, sounds very polished & has some good classical / orchestral presets (though as with all presets, consider them as starting points only).

Lots of great advice in this thread.

One thing I'd like to comment on is that I have been lucky enough to have music I have mixed mastered by some top ME's. None of them reach for a multi-band compressor by default. They have all said to me, almost without fail, that the only time they pull out multi-band compressors is when something is really wrong with the track and there's no chance of the Producer/Engineer taking it back to fix it in the mix.

So it is a myth that Mastering Engineers typically use multi-band compressors but one I hear repeated a little too often.

Of course, they have their uses like everything else. Just thought I'd chip in for people just getting in to mastering.

It took me a while to understand their philosophy, but once you get to know them it all fits! They are very open minded and you can have great discussions about anything with them, sensible comments on plugins behavior or functions are always addressed straight away. In other words it is a great company. If Apple could show only 1/100 part of their (Melda's) responsiveness towards us, we would be in heaven.

Have a nice day!
