can i delete the data in the system log? it takes up 26 GB of my hard disc! help please!

I just followed your instruction and there was no text appearing, it has been empty now in the system log for a couple of minutes. I will just leave it now and see what happens?
I'm not sure I understand your response. You mean there's no output in the Terminal window? In that case, please post a screenshot of the window showing what you did.

this text came up when i clicked on all messages then went back to system log. they cover the time i carried out your instruction. (my external drive was not pluged into my computer which is why time machine failed). I have bold type where i carried out your instruction.

Also, Linc, I don't know if you have seen a similar post of mine on this mentioning which i feel may be important is that i had a new motherboard fitted a couple of years ago because my graphics card burned out!

I posted some instructions for you to do something in the Terminal a few messages back, but I think that was a bit too ambitious for your experience level.
Instead of trying for a precision fix, I suggest you use the Apple Support approach. Back up all data, then boot from your installation disc and reinstall OS X. When the system reboots, run Software Update. You may have to run it more than once to get all available updates. Your data should be unaffected.
If you have any doubts about how to carry out this procedure, don't. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store for assistance.
If there's no improvement after the reinstallation, you may need to do something more drastic: a clean reinstallation. For that, you really do need someone more experienced to help you in person.

I am backed up to time machine on an external drive WD which is kept only for time machine. I think I could do an erase and install, I did it before my update to snow leopard.
I'm not sure it's a good idea to just restore my cleaned disc with the time machine back up in case it reinstalls the same problem, so i was planning just to put certain things like mail and contacts and certain applications (just the ones that came with snow leopard). Or, do you think it will be ok just to reinstall everything?
I could delete the extra applications then back up after and reinstall that back up.

I forgot to mention, that the size of my log file is staying the same now for a couple of days.

from the contextual menu. an auto dialog should open in the general section , what is shown for size and created?

OK. Well, the log file is supposed to be rotated every day at midnight. That's not happening. To find out precisely why would involve some complex manipulations that I think are beyond your experience level, and may also be beyond my ability to remember the details of an OS X version I no longer use. So I'll stick with the suggestion I made earlier to reinstall the OS, or alternatively to get help at an Apple Store. Good luck.
