While copying even a few GB in Finder might take minutes or more, trashing them seems near enough immediate, here, as is emptying the trash afterwards.
Ok Andy thanks. I'll have to figure a way to delete that file somehow.
Hate to say it, but evey nonApple program populating your menubar is probsbly the cause. The menubar is one of those areas that really needs to be just for system items that are most essential. NonApple system items have invariably caused problems since Apple does a good job of cleaning its own system if you leave it on screen saver mode overnight. If you shutdown every night or use Energy Saver you are not as likely to get the logfiles cleaned up, hence your problem. Also if you are leaving your external hard drive plugged in all the time that is not a good idea. Just plug it in when you need to backup or access some infrequently used file.
>> 2 different file type names on my logs...
As mentioned, logs normally go system.log; system.log.0.bz2; system.log.1.bz2 where the .bz2 ones are compressed to take up less space.
It's likely that at some point, either you, by double-clicking or opening a .bz2 file; or some application or utility... un-compressed it to become a much larger system.log.0
I echo a brody - remove cleanmymac completely, & note that you have/had Rapport installed, which sometimes causes problems with Safari, at least.
Ok, brody thanks for that advice, I will act on it! Do you mean that other than apple programes should really not be on my mac or just not be in the dock? thanks!
Hi Andy, that's an interesting point that I may have clicked on a zipped log file and it opened it up to the massive size, although, I only started looking at the logs when I could see in the omni disc sweeper how big those logs were. I put on omni disc sweeper after using the mac disc clean up, because I had so little room left on my hard drive and couldn't work out why, and the mac disc clean up had made no difference. Should i take the omni disc sweeper off? I did get it from the apple site, I was recomended to it and thought it would be ok. I have taken the rapport off now! thanks for your advice!
ODS doesn't cause any problems that I've read of, so long as it isn't used to delete things that shouldn't be...
Hi Andy, just an up date.
I have kept my macbook on all the time for a week in screensaver mode and not to sleep. It's been fine and the remaining large files in the log 15GB have deleted automatically, so I have learned quite a bit here! I have been rather nervous about leaving my macbook on re. fear of the macbook pro overheating because the graphics card burned out after 3 years old and I had to get a new motherboard, Apple were no help at all. I have always kept my macbook on a laptop stand to keep it cool but it had not protected it from the dodgy graphics card in my motherboard. I downloaded fan control to keep it running cooler which seems to work really well.
So I'm really pleased its all working ok and I have over half my hard drive back! thanks again for all help!
