Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

I suddenly cannot drag any files anywhere. I cannot drag files into other files. I cannot drag files into trash. There is no dragging going on. What do I do?

I have already tried "safe reboot." Nope, didn't help.

Let's just say that this has been a discouraging week.

My work Mac's screen crapped out on me.

Then I managed to save data to my own personal Mac, which had never shown signs of trouble.

Now this Mac has crapped out on me, too. What are the odds of that happening.

If I wanted crap, I could have spent a lot less money on a PC.

There, I said it.

Very, very disappointed in MacIntosh tonight.

You said that the reinstall took a long time when it was alomst finished; the reason must be that the internet was slow or gone.

There are a lot of simple apps that do backups, and you can choose what to backup or not. Dragging is not necessary. But you can only use the computer to backup when the OS runs of course.

Has the reinstall OS finished and do you still have the dragging problem? If yes, start the Recovery partition again and click DiskUtility, choose the HDD and do a "Repair Disk". Post the result here.

OS X 10.5 does not have a recovery partition. Its all on the disk. The fact that it is all on the disk throws out network lag as a possibility. Basically, apps do the same thing as draging files... Draging files is just a GUI representation of moving data on a disk. The problem here is that OS X will not attempt to read the data from one locaton while simultaniously writing the data to another location...

Even assuming all of that is incorrect, the disk should never dissapear... Once you have verified the disk and repaired the disk and got the OK on all, and then the disk dissapears off the map, the diagnosis looks grim for the hard disk. As i said before, take it to a genius bar or other Apple Certified Technician and have them do what is best.

Thanks, everyone. Figured I'd gone way past my abilities to handle this one.

Took it in for repair. They're going to reinstall. Tech said that sometimes an archive & reinstall will just hang there on that final minute for hours and hours and hours. They said to just be patient and let it run, that it's not frozen when it does that. They also suggested to avoid shutting it down, since that might create more problems.

Lesson learned.

If they can figure it out, they'll tell what they can about reasons to have lost drag and drop and cut and paste. But they said that they might not be able to. We'll see.

I'll post whatever I learn on this thread.

Thanks again for all the help with this.
