os9.0.4 upgrade to tiger 10.4

hello
please can anyone help me.
I have just bought a G4 dual 450 running OS9.0.4 and I do not want this os at all.
I have tiger on dvd and have tried installing but it doesn't work.
I now know that I must first upgrade os9.04 to os9.2.2 but have searched everywhere for this upgrade and cant find it.the 9.2.2 upgrade at apple says you must already have 9.1.

You do not need to install any particular version of OS 9 on the G4 dual 450 if you never plan on using OS 9.x or Classic (the emulated version of OS 9 running "inside" OS X).

What you do need is a retail version of Tiger (a black disk), not the grey DVD that comes with some particular Mac model. The license that comes with the grey disks covers only the Mac it comes with & Apple sometimes includes tests in the installer to prevent them from being used contrary to that license.

What color is your Tiger DVD disk?

Hi stu8cp

first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!

The very first step is to upgrade your firmware: Firmware Upgrades.

Then update 9.0.4 to at least 9.1, better 9.2.2.: Mac OS 9: Available Updates. Confirm that your hard disk is formated as HFS+ (Apple Extended). Apple Standard will not work.

Then make sure you have the retail full install DVD of Tiger and your computer meets the minimum system requirements for Tiger: Tiger System requirements. Note that you need at least built-in firewire, a DVD-drive and 256 MB RAM!

hi,
thanks very much for your advice.
first i donloaded the firmware4.2.8
and my computer already had it.
then I downloaded update 9.1 (I started with 9.0.4 originally on my computer)i got a message box saying something about an image file dmg.could not be installed but i just skipped and i ended up with 9.1 on my computer although it told me some components could not be installed.
then I downloaded 9.2.1 again same message about image file.dmg but i skipped and now when i turn my computer on it starts up saying welcome to os9.2 then it gets to desktop it loads the icons for hard disk ,internet, trash etc. then they dissappear then a small rectangular white screen appears and then my computer freezes.end of story.
i can no longer get online to get any downloads/fixes(i am talking to you via my trusted pc)and the only cd i have is os9.0.4 installation cd and os9.0.4 system restore.
I could start the whole process again maybe but i am sure i will arrive at the same frozen position.
there was nothing I could do about this image file dmg except abort installation completely or carry on.
I would greatly appreciate some ideas.
many thanks,
stu.

I am confused by your continued attempts to install OS 9 updates & your comment that the only CDs you have are for OS 9.0.4. In your first post you said you had "tiger on dvd" & had no interest in OS 9 at all. If this is true, there is absolutely no need to install any version of OS 9 on this Mac.

OS 9 is not in any way a prerequisite for OS X; in fact, it is not installed on newer PPC Macs by default & isn't even supported on the Intel ones.

As long as you have a retail (black label) Tiger DVD disk & your Mac can read DVD's, you should be able to follow the instructions that came with it, boot into the installer, & install Tiger. This should work whether or not OS 9 is present or functional.

Perhaps if you could tell us more about why & how this didn't work we could be of more help.
