Fed up with iWeb's idiosyncrasies! What program accepts the FTP output file from iWeb with the least amount of work required?

Hi...

I have been a longtime user of iWeb and have learned many things about it the hard way. Now even after duplicating and saving my domain names constantly to external hard drives, downloading additional software such as iWebdrop and iWeb SEO, learning how to unhide files that shouldn't be hidden in the first place, and consistently finding the elusive domain files, I find myself, yet again, searching high and low for the updated domain that I spent two days doing a major rehaul on. I have proof that I wasn't dreaming as it's currently up on my website and I have the exported FTP file.

So after years of crying over lost iWeb domains I've decided it time to make the leap to different software.

I need something akin to iWeb as I'm not at all versed in HTML. My main goal is to minimize the amount of work by using the FTP files I exported last night.

I've read the recomendations here but just want a simple solution with no HTML coding needed.

Flux?

Thanks!

I am the queen of storing my domains in a safe location. I always duplicate them and back them up on my external hard drive. I save every 30 minutes.

The last time I duplicated my domain was two days ago, just as I began to make all the changes.

Everytime I saved I watched the little line so I know it was saving somewhere. But honestly none of the domain files reflect any of the changes.

Where the heck was it saving to?

That's what brings me back to the mobile me issue. I truly think it was saving to that "disk" and that's why it kept popping up. That "little blue cloud on a disk drive" icon is no where to be found now.

Any suggestions on using time machine to fix this?

I fel like if I take the entire computer back to 1:45 this morning I might find what I need.

Thoughts?

It looks as though its an alias. If double clicking it gets you nowhere it means that the original is lost. It shouldn't have anything to do with iWeb.

As far as moving on is concerned, I wouldn't even consider rebuilding your site with iWeb. Lets face it, iWeb was a really good app in its day but its well past its sell by date now.

Your website is a business one and you really need to rebuild it so that it can be easily viewed and navigated on smart phones and small tablets like the iPad Mini.

As OT has pointed out, iWeb generates a lot of code that is really superfluous outside of the application.

You really need to rebuild your site no matter what application you choose.

There is an iWeb replacement app being developed but you would still need your Domain.sites2 file to import your site into it. Also, initially, it won't be capable of creating responsive designs. This means that its going to be a while before it can be considered a serious tool for building a commercial/business website.

Ok Jeff,

So I took my computer back 1:45 this morning. iWeb is open and my lost file is still there. I don't want to close it for fear of losing it again but when I save it, according to the tiny preview, it doesn't seem to be saving anything new. How do I save it now to make sure I don't loose it?

The little domain file looks nothing like it. Nor to any of the other icons od domains I'm using file finder to find.

Guess I'm not the Queen afterall. Just the page or joker! 😉

Hi Jeff,

I figured it out and have saved the file under a new name to my external drive.

Just one question...

iWeb is definitely not saving to domain. It's saving to my external drive as that's where the file is. I'm not sure why the file got corrupted but what do you suggest I do to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I'm now using the iWeb domain chooser instead of iWeb drop. Is that going to help me avoid this issue in the future?

I'll take your advice and switch to a different program soon. Just don't have time right now if it's not an emergency.

I thank you for all your assistance and advice today. :)
