Try installing Perian; as AVI is a container and not a format, the required codec might not exist for Mac OS X.

Thanks for your quick advice. I just checked out the website and it says: Perian is no longer under development and does not work with QuickTime 10 or above. However, it still works with QuickTime 7.6.6.
I am running OS X and using QuickTime Player 10.2. Any additional advise? i greatly appreciate your help.
Quicktime has it's limitations. I'd recommend trying the VLC Media Player. I have, yet, to find a media format that it can't play.
I agree with Cerebro. Download VLC player, I personally prefer an application over a plugin for a curently installed application. Then once you have VLC installed then you can set your default settings to open all files with the .avi extension with VLC.
Thanks for the great advice. I am going to download VLC player. I have been trying to get the videos to play in QuickTime because I can then embed them in my PowerPoint presentations. Do you know if VLC will allow me to convert or export them into other formats that might be QuickTime compatible?
SmartConverter in the Mac App store works good.
