Printing to an HP 4250

We rolled out 300 MacBook Airs and 35 13 inch MacBook Pros to our 7-12 students and teachers. They were imaged with Mountain Lion and are managed by the Casper Suite. The student MacBook Airs have one user account that is a Standard User. There is also a hidden Admin account.

These computers have four printers installed, all HP LaserJet 4250s. Of late, when someone uses Pages or MS Word and prints something with one or more pictures, the job fails with an error of ERROR: limitcheck OFFENDING COMMAND: image. From what I can find, this is a PostScript error. If I save the file as a PDF, or print to a different model printer they print fine. This wouldn't be so bad but HP just threw out an update a couple of weeks ago. For what it is worth, I had the same problem when I tried to print to these printers on my MacBook Pro and 10.8.2.

Has anyone else seen this and/or do you have a suggestion on how to fix this issue

Thank you in advance.

The offending command can often be a result of a plugin or filter. These are referenced in the PPD for the printer. With the HP supporting Postscript (PS), it is possible to use any PS driver. You mentioned being able to print to a different model of printer. As a test you could create a new printer queue to the LJ4250 but use the PPD for this different model that did work. You could also use the Generic Postscript driver included with OS X. You don't get all the finishing features with the Generic PS, like tray selection or stapling, but it would let you see if the PS error is driver related.
