Same here, I plugged my iphone in did a sync, apparently it forgot to do a backup in the process. During the update it got stuck on the verifing update (the first verify before update). It now is in recovery mode, all the programs to exit recovery mode don't work and pressing the restore and update fails. Basically I have a bricked iphone 4s.

I have an appointment at the apple store tonight, I am hoping they can help me, I am still in contract, and my phone is almost 4 months out of warranty. My thought is they screwed something up with this update, they need to deal with this.

I will let you know what I hear from them tonight, but I hope someone else is able to make it to the apple store before me.

Ok I got it, took some reading and a little work, but I now have a factory wiped iphone to restore to. it is a problem with the host file on your computer. Here is what you do to fix it:

Mac OS X

Open terminal, type in

sudo nano /private/etc/hosts
hit enter.

find every entry for gs.apple.com and delete it.

Exit by pressing Control X, then press Y when it asks to save.

Retry Restore

Windows

Navigate to %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\ (typically c:\\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\)

Open the file named host in Notepad.

Delete any records for gs.apple.com.

Save and exit

Retry restore, a restart my be necessary, I did not try with windows.

Not sure if you have fixed by now

This happened to me yesterday with my new IPad - luckily I had backed up prior to downloading ios 6.1

My backup is on my work PC - Windows XP

After an hour talking to Apple support and our IT people trying to assist - got nowhere

I then connected my IPad to another PC in our office - received message that a IPad was detected in recovery mode and must be restored before using ITunes. So I restored on colleagues PC - this worked OK

I was asked if I wanted to back up from my colleagues ITunes back up - NO...or this was a new IPad - YES

I disconnected from colleagues PC

Connected back to my PC - and restored apps/music/books from my back-up. All OK.

Not sure if my photos copied over - and my IPad is at home today - so can't check at the moment !

I also have a IPhone 5 - and when I connect to ITunes next - I will NOT download 6.1

Same thing (connect to itunes graphic) with my 4S and win7 PC laptop through a USB 3.0 port when it failed. Note I am fanatical about keeping everything up to date so it was nothing old affecting it. Here's what I did and it worked though was scary. Why? The Vs 5 to 6 update required me to restore also but it also wiped out all the apps on the iphone. Manually putting everything back in through itunes was was brutal. I considered that the Apple equivalent of a PC BSOD.

Before updating:

Plug laptop into power. You never know how long this will take.

Synch with itunes.

Make a manual backup of everything through itunes.

Do the update physically connected to the PC with itunes, not wifi:

It got as far as the connect to itunes graphic and failed. Leave everything connected.

I rebooted win7 and moved the 4s connector to a USB 2.0 port. Why? Read somewhere that timing issues with faster USB 3.0 can be a problem when updating iphone opsys. Forgot that until the failure reminded me.

Started iTunes. Be patient with USB 2.0. Watch TV or something.

Waited while the 4s connected and then it asked for a restore from the backup I just made prior to starting.

It restored and all was well exactly as it was prior to to the update.

6.1 was installed and all my apps and everything else was there. The backup restore was obviously using the 6.1 opsys which I verified.

Unlike the Vs 5 to 6 fiasco, this seemed to worked. Don't know if it will for you but hope it helps some.
