iOS 6.1 Battery Life

Not sure why I am even taking the additional time.Guess because thats what we do in IT. And hopefully someone else may benefit from this.

Root cause? my original statement "typically the issues come from the update process itself, or a hung app or open app when the update starts."

Particular app? exchange email or corrupt settings that did not carry over during the update process. WhatsApp , Facebook, any GPS type apps hung up

Whose code is spinning the processor so hard that the iPhone stays abnormally warm? Again typical symptom of corrupt email account . Why? because if the email fired off during the update process it could be hung up trying to get an ACK back from the server.

Again just providing this information. Do with it what you want. Believe it or dont. Try it or live with your issue.

Are you an Apple Employee? What facts are backing up your statement that "iOS 6.1 itself is not the issue"? You haven't mentioned anything about root cause. A particular App? One of the carriers? Is my whole "disk" being indexed? Whose code is spinning the processor so hard that the iPhone stays abnormally warm?

My Responses to your "Solutions":

yeah right.... you're on wifi... swtich to mobile data and see how fast that batt percentage goes down!!!

Again comments from an un-informed user. All I can tell you at this point is go research yourself and read how the vast majority of users dont have issues at all and of the ones who did have either been helped by these procedures I outlined or helped by iOS 6.1 itself. Battery improvements, increased wifi performance,increased performance overall all have been reported by the majority of users and application developers who have used iOS 6.1. I could ask where are your facts that there is a bug in iOS6.1 and that this is not being cause by some other app or process?

I am sorta stumped as to why the hostility toward me and my advice to try and help. Dang you seem to have worse issues going on than your iPhone problems. And really just skip over these posts if you dont think they are worthy or come directly from Craig Federighi himself. Just trying to help and outline a process that I know for a fact has helped users in the past and currently helped users get through failed iOS updates.

I want to know what the actual failure is, and why the CPU is running full bore. It has nothing to do with battery Calibration. The battery level is quite accurate. The Problem is that the battery's charge is being Consumed at an abnormal rate.

"All my devices work fine" does not equate with "There is no bug." Someday, if you ever are part of a team that develops software, you'll understand what I just wrote.

OK, I did two things: (1) restarted my phone and (2) turned off personal hotspot when not using it. Now my battery life seems back to at least where it was pre-6.1.

Sorry folks for getting side tracked in a ******* match. One other suggestion as a last resort if the other suggestions didnt help. You can google for "DFU restore" to see how to do this but basically that will reflash the firmware with fresh iOS code (6.1 now) basically making it factory fresh in a since. This will restore any corrupt code that may have gotten that way during an update process from updating from one version to the next. Again this is a well know solution that has helped many users as well. This is a little more complicated process but really not that difficult. Pretty much a form of what Apple geniuses may do if you do to the Apple store. There are good writeups available to step you through the process. Basically you get the ipsw firmware file for your particular model device and restore it in a low level way. Seems as though sometimes when users OTA update is when the corruption may show up. Could be due to poor wifi connectivity or interference or any number of things. Anyway just wanted to pass that along as well if anyone is interested or never heard of it before.

I upgraded to IOS 6.1 yesterday, at 10pm my phone was at 100% charge and dead by 7am next morning. I noticed that LTE had defaulted to ON... no LTE networks here and turning that off appears to have resolved my battery life issue.

Have not charged from yesterday, using only cellular data:

Usage 2hrs 23 mins

Standby 1 day 7hrs

Battery 49%

my iPhone 5 has been at 100% ever since the upgrade to 6.1. I am still recharging according to previous pattern because I don't trust this. Usually, by the end of the day, it would be down to 65-75%. Oh, yeah! Love the update, except I just don't believe it. Hopefully there will be a 6.1.1 soon to fix this. Otherwise, the upgrade seems to have no problems.

Just to add my 2 cents. I've had my iPhone 5 about 2 weeks now after lobbying at work for 2 years. I upgraded to 6.0.2 as soon as I saw there was an update because a few guys at work were complaining about battery life. Mine was ok for a week or so then diabolical. I ran dead twice the day before 6.1 was released so I was looking for solutions. Tried everything from switching everything off to deleting all my apps. I didn't have anything to restore as it was a fresh phone and I was coming from blackberry. I was in the process of trying to downgrade when 6.1 was released so went for it. No issue upgrading via itunes tethered to a mac. Battery life was poor for the first day and it ran dead and switched itself off. Full charge overnight and used Sys Activity Manager to monitor battery charge. Long trickle charge finished about 5am this morning (12hours charge time). I don't know what happened but today it's a different phone.

2 hours usage and 9 hours standby and still at 79% (dropped more since starting this post than it has all day)

Maybe there's something about these phones indexing etc that just needs to run before they are fully functional?

I've also managed to rack up 2.6gb in cell data usage somehow when I'm predominantly connected to wifi.

How can an email account become corrupt? That definitely sounds like an OS issue, not email client. Apps causing the cpu to run excessively? That's a combo issue imo. If, and I mean, if, the app is to blame at all then it means the app itself wasn't tested enough to add safeguards to it from doing so and the OS lacks the same features.

I did a restore of final 6.1 via USB And iTunes And configured my iPhone as New, Not restoring it from my iCloud Backup.

So with The Standard iOS And all Standard Apple Apps i get brillant stats

2.45h useage

12.58 standby

Still 76% Battery

So there seems to be a "guilty" App that ge generated the Ongoing cell Traffic.

Will Now restore apps One by One And Let you know my findings.

Updated my iPhone 5 to iOS 6.1 .. 8.5 hours standby, 1.6 hours 3G/LTE usage, now 70% left.

I also updated my wife's 4S to iOS 6.1. her typical day usage with 6.0.2 will leave her 12-15% battery left at the end of the day. But after updated to 6.1, she had 40% left at the end of the day. Also, it felt more responsive, opening closing apps.

I'd say from my experience, both iPhone 5 and 4S' battery life improved with iOS 6.1 ... with more improvement felt on the 4S with better battery life and noticeably faster response (almost as fast as the iPhone 5).

Dear All,

I turned off SIRI and get better battery life....I am not too sure if that is the reason....but battery seems to improve.

Last night, I was playing around with my phone and I knowingly turned of SIRI ( to troubleshoot my lousy battery life)...

The battery today was seemingly much better. It is now 5:30pm I and my battery level is at 55%...for the past 2 days, my battery was at >30% or high 20....

I will try for more days and see.

Any one experience this issue or is it me.
