I am trying to edit a project originally started on another computer, by someone else and saved onto an external h-drive, but keep getting 'general error 48' when I try to render it to work further. Can anyone help?

Final Cut Pro 7, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

You don't want to take them out of the browser, you want to reconnect them to valid (good) media. If you have good copies of the jpegs, then control click on the bad clip in the browser and from the drop down menu, choose Reconnect Media, and navigate to the good jpeg and Connect it.

Now the good jpegs should show up in your project.
