The problem with The New Yorker is solved now. An update that fixes the bug was sent to us. I am now able to read the magazine when offlline.

I didn't receive the update that fixed the bug for you.

is it a matter of reinstalling the New Yorker app, and then one has to re-download the back issues?

It's an update to the New Yorker magazine app, not the content. Installing the new version (4.1) doesn't seem to alter or delete your downloaded content, and does fix the offline bug.

When I turned mi iPad on this morning I got the indication that there was un update for the The New Yorker app that, among other things, would fix the problem of reading the magazine when offline. I updated the app and now I can read the magazine even when I am in airplane mode. After that I got a reply to my email - I had complained in the The

New Yorker site about the problem with my subscription - saying that they were doing their best to fix this problem. As far as I am concerned, the problem was solved. Hope you are able to solve the problem soon too.

Looks like other Conde Nast publications like Vanity Fair and GQ had fixes today as well.  Took a while but all right in the world again.

I got that update but it hasn't fixed the issue for me. I even deleted and reinstalled the Vanity Fair app and it still crashes when offline/airplane mode. :(

FYI - Golf Digest came with a fix, but some other magazines I got haven't, so still doesn't work.

Wonder what the fix is as the individual vendors need to bring their own fix. If this is pending on them Apple could have informed there after, but instead they just leave everyone in a dark, arrogant.

Some magazines are still a problem in some geographies - specifically Conde Nast has released a version of the US Vanity Fair app containing a fix for this (V3.9 released 12 Feb 2013), but they have not yet released a fix for the UK Vanity Fair app (still at V2. released Nov 28 2012).  There are other region-specific versions of this magazine app so they may not have got around to those yet, either....

That's what I figured. I am trying to deal with VF and Conde Nast and am getting the run around and that's if I'm lucky enough to even get a response.

Publishing in general is changing and if companies like Conde Nast are going to survive in the changed market, they're going to have to really embrace digital publishing and further to that, they're going to have to provide support for this medium.

I wonder what the advertisers who pay $$$ to advertise in UK Vanity Fair would say if they knew this was happening. They would be paying rates based on distribution numbers. Those numbers are totally inaccurate if the magazine cannot be read when the iPad is offline.

I tried dealing with Conde Nast/Vanity Fair in the US, they are completely useless and ignored what I was saying and told me to upgrade to the latest OS and app version. Finally they told me they were passing me on to the UK office. I never heard anything so I ended up calling Conde Nast in London and this is when things started to happen. I was put in contact with a fabulous girl in the circulation department who immediately took ownership of the issue. I explained to her what the issue was and she investigated for me and came back and told me that she'd spoken to the tablet team who were aware of the issue and were working on a fix which they anticipate will be ready next week in time for the release of the April issue of Vanity Fair. She really was fantastic and I'm quite grateful to her. I hope the fix is available next week but it was nice to get a definitive answer on what is happening.

Been wondering if they would ever to anything. Thanx for your tenacity and the post.

Well that sounds a little more hopeful. I'm still bouncing between US and UK support...

I have had the same problem with Newsweek. i have contacted their customer service X 2, and received automated responses telling me how wonderful they are. I will end my subscription on a couple weeks unless this is fixed.

It might be worth giving them a call. That's the only way I got anyone from Vanity Fair to help me.

I've said it before I know but these publishers really have to lift their game if they're going to survive in the digital world. I'd have given up on Vanity Fair except I love that magazine so much it would have been like cutting my nose off to spite my face.

I bought the new issue of Practical Photoshop thru newsstand and can't get it to open.  I get a tantalsing glimpse of the contents before it crashes and I'm back in newsstand.  Very frustrating.  I resorted to buying another copy in Zinio.  The follows problems with the 'Times and Sunday Times' new app in newsstand.  Seems to be a newsstand problem, everything else is fine
