iOS 6.1 Update and now WiFi problems

iPhone 5 with iOS 6.1 and I can connect to wifi networks, but my phone acts like it is not on wi-fi... Full bars and all that too.

I signed out of my gmail app because it was not downloading my email... now trying to sign in and it says "Connect to the Internet to Continue".

This update has messed up my phone...

Have been fighting this all afternoon. Unplugged both my DSL and Airport and got it to join my WiFi network. As soon as I walked to the other side of the house, it was gone. Checked under Settings and saw WiFi was not connected. Not only not connected but the on/off switch is greyed out and refuses to become active. Did the 6.1 update last night and it seemed okay this morning. I tend to use my MacBook or iMac more than the phone so I didn't really see anything wrong. Lost the WiFi a couple hours ago, did a Restore but no luck, other than that short period of time mentioned above. I also noticed when typing email, text, or iMessage, the keyboard hesitates before displaying, especially if there is a photo attachment included. Had an earlier note posted but thought it had been cleared after powering down the DSL modem and router.

Have had a few instances since the update of customers having this problem.

The main fix seems to be to make sure you have your router/access point firmware up to date, make sure you use WPA/PSK2.

The "5"'s at least join a lot faster and stay connected. At least on our AU models.

Another thing while your in plying with wireless settings, some routers that use the "auto channel" feature confuses the IPhones. Try turning it of and fixing it to something like channel 7 or around the middle of the band segment.

Hope this helps a little.

Cheers!

Had the constantly rebooting, not holding signal issue. Just had to go get a new iPhone 5. If you go to Genius Bar, say you already restored as botha NEW IPHONE AND RESTORED FROM A BACKUP they will give you a new iPhone 5.

Tech said he thinks its an issue with the Sim reader . . . on a small percentage of phones it fails with ios 6.1

My new phone is working fine.

Problem solved but it took a trip to the Apple Store for a replacement phone. Not only was I having the problems I reported above but when I made a phone call Wednesday morning, I found that what came out of the ear speaker sounded like someone wrinkling up a piece of paper. Tried another call and found it to be the same until I put it on "Speaker" then it was clear as a bell. Hmmm, WiFi module & ear speaker both gone bad!! Anyhow, set it up as a new phone with 6.1 on it and all is well. The WiFi holds nice and strong again even out in my driveway which is on the far side of the house from the router (Airport Extreme 2nd generation).
