Cannot send emails in Mac Mail using third party SMTP via BT Infinity Broadband

EUREKA!!

I have a Mac Book Pro and recently had my home broadband upgraded to BT Infinity. Prior to this upgrade sending emails via my Mac mail was working perfectly. Since the new installation I could no send any external emails using the Hotmail.co.uk or 123-Reg.co.uk smtp outgoing servers. Googlemail.com was ok.? very strange.

So when I connected the same macbook to other wireless connections it would work perfectly.???

So after many hours wasted messing around, I managed to get the right person at the right time via BT helpline in the UK not India. (India helpine just say "we are not trained in Apple".

So the very polite man from UK Helpline provided me with the solution.

GO TO > Apple Icon top left > System Preferences > Network > Wireless >

Select your wireless connection > Click Advanced lower right on popup

Select DNS tab

Click on the + under DNS left pane and type the following :- 208.67.222.222

Click Apply

BINGO!!!!

I hope this helps someone, as I know how painful these types of issues can be.

Cheers

😉

HAGGIE - I have just found your post (even thoughh you posted it a while ago).

Cant believe it -Tried what you said and it worked. I can now send email on laptop!

I have wasted so much time on this and had problem for almost a year, after upgrading to Infinity (Hub3).

Could receive but not send mail via Laptop. No problem sending via phone or iPad.

BT - absolutely useless.

Apple Store - not a clue - bring your laptop in to store. (not same situation is it)

SMTP provider - tried to help - even gave me a fix for the problem - it didnt work.

Your solution did the trick!

THANK YOU SO MUCH

Do you know how to fix problem printing wirelessly to an Epson printer? Could print wirelessly from Laptop prior to infinity. Now only prints using a cable, yet I can print from phone and iPad. Epson Technical support tried to fix problem - all the tests proved printer communication with router ok but Laptop fails to print wirelessly.

Had same problem and BT changed the hotmail outgoing server details to "their BT server". Marketing ploy? I could see all my e-mails under hotmail (internet) but not my "sent" e-mails through Apple. I changed the DNS settings to 208.67.222.222 and using only the smtp.live.com outgoing server, i.e. the hotmail server account, everything was OK. Great help. Thanks Haggie.

Dear Haggie,

Thank you so much!

I have been at this for about 9 months since moving into a property that uses BT as its provider. Given the problems that I had with hotmail with its SMTP thinking that it was hotmail moving to outlook and so on and so forth. Then had problems with my 123-reg account too. I have tried online chat with Apple, Genius bar and then discussing with other Apple users too, and all getting confused, until one thought that perhaps it was BT. I was then very lucky in finding your solution.

So far so good, it is working, and I feel so pleased.

Thank you so much!

One question: why is it that I am unable to see my old sent messages in my accounts, and can only view ones that I have recently done. They're in a folder, given that I am using IMAP, but would be much easier to see them in my sent folder in Mail's automatic Sent list. Sorry that doesn't make a huge amount of sence! Thank you!
