My iphone 5 suddenly died.

Dead cell phone + 3 hours on phone with Verizon & iPhone tech support trying to recover = dead cell phone. It was only 1 year and 3 months old, may it rest in peace and no I didn't have extended warranty, didn't know such a thing existed and no I didn't back up to the Cloud which was quite foolish in hind sight. Now, however, I do have a good insight on why Apple stock has done so well. You pay a gazillion $ for the product, but the warranty is only for 1 year, after that, you are screwed. The tech at the Apple store did offer to try to change the battery (there was a battery replacement program for the iPhone 5, but my phone didn't qualify) for the low cost of only $79, which also came with a slim chance of actually fixing it as well as higher probability of damaging the phone, in which case, they would charge me only $269 for an iPhone 5. So I have an expensive lemon of a phone and if THEY damage it with the battery replacement, it becomes a bigger costlier problem for ME! Unless your phone is under warranty, expect to pay a lot for Apple support which nicely helps with Apple bottom line. My only consolation is that I own a couple of shares of Apple stock which I will likely need to sell so I can buy a new phone.

RJM, I got the same problem. My iPhone 5, without any prior warnings, died. I googled this issue and found YOU I followed your advice and gest what? Bingo! It worked. THANK YOU SO MUCH

Just had my 5s running 8.1.1 do the same thing. 97% battery charged, went to use it, completly dead! Held the power and home button until the apple appeared. Weird.

Thank you - I had already tried the toggle thingy several times as it had worked in the past. But turning the silent switch on and off several times first made all the difference this time!

Thank you RJM! I just gave my iPhone 5 to my nephew yesterday and this morning it was dead.

Never happened to me in 2+ years but the toggle trick worked! It didn't work only pressing power + home button!
