My iphone 5 suddenly died.

My iphone 5 suddenly died. It will not turn on when I plug it in. It was working well the night before and nothing happened to it over night. The battery was charged.

iPhone 5, iOS 6.1

As others have mentioned, the difference between this and a Windows BSOD is that there is no feedback telling you the OS crashed. It looks like a dead battery, but when plugged in to charge while in this state, the iPhone draws no current and does not charge (just happened to me and before I found this thread I wanted to see if it was a dead battery but the phone drew no power when plugged into a charger). I thought maybe the battery failed, but once I did the home/sleep button hold, the current meter twitched and it started charging and was rebooting a moment later.

Anyway, if anyone from Apple reads this, a screen telling me that the OS crashed or some other signal would be helpful instead of just a device that looks bricked.

Thanks!

Thank you RJM, I tried your advise

  • Toggle the "silent button" above the volume rocker back and forth 2 times
  • Press the home button and also the sleep button at the same time. the apple logo will appear right after.

as my iPhone 5 also suddenly did not turn on, and would not charge. Now it is working after trying your suggestion. Thanks heaps.

OKay, this has actually happened on my Ipad before and similar has worked, however my daughters IPod 5 died at 7 months and Apple Genius could not get working and she had to have replaced.

The same thing has just happened 13 weeks into a brand new one. Have not tried this workaround as she is in a different state ATM.

Be interesting to see if that fixes it this time as replacement Ipod did not come with the normal 12 months warranty Apple states when one of their products is defective, was advised and written on this site that warranty ends in December 2014 as that is when original 12 months is up. Can't hurt to give it a go and cannot find anything under Ipod 5 dying. Thanks FYI

Dead cell phone + 3 hours on phone with Verizon & iPhone tech support trying to recover = dead cell phone. It was only 1 year and 3 months old, may it rest in peace and no I didn't have extended warranty, didn't know such a thing existed and no I didn't back up to the Cloud which was quite foolish in hind sight. Now, however, I do have a good insight on why Apple stock has done so well. You pay a gazillion $ for the product, but the warranty is only for 1 year, after that, you are screwed. The tech at the Apple store did offer to try to change the battery (there was a battery replacement program for the iPhone 5, but my phone didn't qualify) for the low cost of only $79, which also came with a slim chance of actually fixing it as well as higher probability of damaging the phone, in which case, they would charge me only $269 for an iPhone 5. So I have an expensive lemon of a phone and if THEY damage it with the battery replacement, it becomes a bigger costlier problem for ME! Unless your phone is under warranty, expect to pay a lot for Apple support which nicely helps with Apple bottom line. My only consolation is that I own a couple of shares of Apple stock which I will likely need to sell so I can buy a new phone.

My iphone 5 suddenly died.
