My iphone 5 suddenly died.

My iphone 5 suddenly died. It will not turn on when I plug it in. It was working well the night before and nothing happened to it over night. The battery was charged.

The same thing happened to me. My iPhone 5 was dead when I woke up this morning. The phones was linked it the charger. I searched on Google and read these posts here and saw one person's post that stated:

  • Toggle the "silent button" above the volume rocker back and forth 2 times
  • Press the home button and also the sleep button at the same time. the apple logo will appear right after.

ANd now my iPhone is turned on from being dead. If I didn't have another iPhone to use, I would have gone over to the store to buy another phone (as I have to use my phone for work).

It sounds like Apple is doing this on purpose so that you'd go out to buy another phone... Otherwise, why would toggling the silent button a few times and home + power button reset work exactly in this manner? Apple has been turning me off to their products ever since Jobs died. I never thought I'd say this, but I am seriously thinking about defecting to Samsung. And that's with having an iWatch. I will sell the iWatch on eBay and defect if I have to. Apple has been really turning me off lately.

I was in a panic when I just tried to use my iPhone 5s - dead battery for no reason. Followed helpful hint from RJM (from 3 years ago!!!) - didn't toggle the volume buttons though - and the phone is now working. (I will still check at the Apple store to be sure this won't happen again.) Thank you RJM.

OMG The reply about toggling the silence button and then holding down the home button and sleep button at the same time really worked. I thought my phone had just decided to die for good. This is so strange. The advice given by RJM on Jan 30, 2013 worked with my iPhone 5c. It saved me a trip to apple store.

Thank you - thank you - thank you!

While this is a rare and strange occurrence, I will not be abandoning my iPhone or my apple watch. As they say you get what you pay for. I have definitely gotten my money's worth from my Apple products. I am one very happy customer. Now all I wonder is why did the phone die, so that I can avoid the situation again.

I have tried everything in here with no luck.

Here's what's going on:

iphone 5 running iOs9, most recent updates.

A few weeks ago, started giving me a pop-up error saying "this accessory not supported" when it wasn't even plugged in. Cleaned out the lightning port with both a pin and a bit of alcohol. Completely free of lint or anything.

A few days ago, it started shutting down randomly. When I would plug it in, it would act as if it had no charge, giving me the red battery icon. Once plugged in it would immediately say anywhere from 80% to 100% charged, but when I unplugged would instantly shut down. Now it won't even start up when it's plugged in. Occasionally, if it hasn't been plugged in for a while, when I plug it in I get 1) the red battery 2) the apple logo 3) complete shut-down after about five seconds. Have tried multiple charges, eve a brand new one.

Can't start in recovery mode, holding both buttons doesn't work, even tried the semi-legit toggling of the mute button and volume buttons. Nothing. Completely bricked.

Any thoughts?

OK, so when you hold both the Home and Power buttons down, are you holding them down for up to 30 seconds?

If not, then hold them down until the Apple appears, which can take up to 30 seconds.

If so, then follow the steps in this article. which essentially start with the same steps as above, but if you are able to get the Apple logo with it hooked up to iTunes, then continue to follow the steps to recover and restore it.

If none of those work, then your best bet is to visit the nearest Apple Store to see if they can determine the issue. Going forward, if you are cleaning out any ports on your device, I would strongly recommend that you do not use alcohol or any other liquid form of cleaning. Just compressed air, a soft clean toothbrush, or a toothpick.

Best of luck,

Works for me. But I am just kinda confused. Recently my home button stopped working so I really didn't expect this would work (home + sleep wake button trick). So my question is... does this mean my home button is still working? Because now that my Iphone 5 is functional again, my home button is really not working. Sorry for my bad English.

My iphone 5 suddenly died.
