My iphone 5 suddenly died.
My iphone 5 suddenly died. It will not turn on when I plug it in. It was working well the night before and nothing happened to it over night. The battery was charged.

I have had Apple products since the beginning of Apple, They have been reliable. While this phone on OS 7 came back to life, it is still not working as a phone. I hear only parts of the other party's conversation, but that person hears me. (Some people may think that is an advantage.)
4 of my friends have had more serious crashes after downloading OS7. What is going on?
I'm with robdubious that there does seem to be something to toggling the silent switch. My iPhone5 died suddenly this evening with approximately 80% of the battery left. I tried pressing the two buttons to reboot multiple times in an effort to bring my phone back to life, but nothing happened regardless of how long I held them. I had resigned myself to having to take the phone in to be looked at tomorrow morning, but decided to research the issue online in the meantime when I came across this thread. It didn't work for me when I toggled the switch only the two times, but after a couple more tries of toggling the switch multiple times (approximately 6-10 times) and then pressing and holding the two buttons for a few seconds, I was relieved to see my iPhone finally started to reboot! Thank you for the great tip, RJM...you made my Friday evening a much happier one than what it had been before I found this thread!
For those of you who keep track of all of the other little details, here's some background info about my user style/habits IOS version, and performance observations:
- This is my first iPhone and I've had it approximately 10 months. I have always used IOS 6 until just recently; I updated to IOS 7 the day after it was released. I close out my extra apps several times a day and would rarely have several apps running at once or any apps running that have been active for multiple hours.
- I do not typically use the silence switch but rather will usually just turn the ringer volume down with the buttons instead. (I'm hesitant to use the switch because shortly after I first got my phone, I missed a few phone calls because my phone hadn't rung. One of my coworkers came to my rescue that time by figuring out the problem...the ringer switch didn't appear to be in the silent position (no red showing), but it wasn't 100% clicked back over either and my phone was indeed in 'Do Not Disturb' mode!) I'm not sure if this is coincidence or not, but for the first time in months, I had actually flicked the switch over to silence my phone a few hours prior to it dying. The switch had been flicked back to the normal position though and the phone was still functioning approximately 3 hours later. It was approximately 1.5 hours after that though (4.5 hours total), that I discovered that my iPhone had died.
- For the most part, IOS 6 ran fairly well for me. I would get the occasional little glitch where apps would start to crashing, or my iPhone itself would suddenly flicker and/or reboot itself, or else my iPhone would freeze without warning. I learned quickly, however, that if I stayed on top of closing down extra apps that are running and powered my phone off completely 1-2 times a week that the glitches I was experiencng were dramatically reduced.
- Since updating to IOS 7, I have been encountering several of the glitches that I described above and, both out of frustration and necessity, have been rebooting my iPhone a minimum of once a day. On an average day, I would guess that I have been rebooting my iPhone 2-3 times. I've been vigilent about closng unused apps and making sure that I follow as many of the 'best practice' guidelines to preserve battery life and improve performance, but these 'best practices' don't seem to help the way they did in the previous IOS version. The bottom line is that my daily user habits are actually better since updating to IOS 7, but my overall phone & battery performance is significantly reduced in comparison to IOS 6.
- I've experienced my phone freezing and becoming unresponsive before, which is why I knew how to do a hard reset. This is the first time, however, that my iPhone has suddenly died like this! I have read my manual, I 'baby' my iPhone, and I fully realize that it contains a computer chip and will be subject to unexplained glitches. That being said, I don't think that it is acceptable to have a dramatic increase in the number of glitches that occur after updating to a new IOS version that has been Beta tested and is supposedly ready for General Release. I also don't think that it is acceptable for there to be a known issue affecting multiple IOS versions that cause the iPhone to suddenly shut down and become non-responsive. Yes my home computer will freeze sometimes or it may even start to reboot itself, but it has never shut down without warning and then not respond when I press the power button or Ctrl-Alt-Delete! I'm thrilled that the issue was resolved in a relatively short and painless amount of time, but this incident has negatively impacted my trust in Apple and has me feeling particularly nervous because the end of my warranty period is lurking just around the corner!
I have managed to restore my brother's iPhone that 'died' 6 month's ago by following RJM's suggestion. My brother was fed up with pressing home+ power buttons! and chucked the in a drawer and bought another phone. Pressing those buttons and toggling the 'silent' switch several times did the trick. iPhone software restored. I'm sure he will scream when he realises that his phone his alive and kicking. Shall we call it 'RJM's reset method'? Thanks RJM.
WTH!!!! This trick actually works!! I am in shock! 😮 😕 RJM you just saved my life!
I was looking on Google, found something, tired it and it woked:
All seems well now, but very strange.
DUDE! This freakin worked...I was trying everything and nothing worked, then I saw this post and was like, F it I will try it. Thanks!
Very helpful.
My daughter's iPhone 5 went black about 10 hours after the update to iOS 7. Suddenly died and showed only unresponsive black screen. The phone was about 80% fully charged at the time it died. I worked with her for about a half hour trying the standard reboot procedure, then same while plugged into the charger. We probably went through that 5 times. Absolutely no response. We then tried connecting it via USB to her laptop, but iTunes did not recognize.
Finally after deciding that we'd have to take it into the genius bar, we stumbled on this thread and tried toggling the 'silent button' -- and then doing the standard reboot sequence. The phone finally showed signs of life. HOWEVER,in our case the phone did not return immediately to operation -- we had to completely restore from the computer... and are in the process of doing that now. It's a drag that it has to be restored... and just hoping that this does not fail.
The phone has been totally problem-free until today. Strongly suspect the iOS 7 update.
My 4s died this morning - worked fine last night, charged up and then dead. I also suspect a software issue as I have not had any other issues prior to this. I am two months away from a renewal on my contract. Stuck with out a phone. ARG!
Mr. Finch,
Toggling the silent switch can indeed have an effect on the iphone. I don't have a schematic but I am a computer engineer and know first-hand that electronic items can be affected by a switch when they are off. First I'll provide two examples and then give you a plausible explanation as to why.
While in college about 15 years ago I was in the library and the printer would not print. I tried turning it off and on and it still would not work. I unplugged and plugged it back in and still nothing. I unplugged it, turned it on and then off and plugged it back in and lo and behold it worked. A coincidence?
Second example happened just two weeks ago, my wife forgot to add water to our rice cooker and it wouldn't turn on. She unplugged it and plugged it back in. Nothing. I told her to unplug it, push a few of the buttons, plug it back in and try it again - it worked.
How can this be? Another coincidence? I don't think so and here's why. The reason I believe it sometimes works is because usually electric circuits have capacitors in them to help prevent low voltage conditions or temporary spikes. When a device is turned off these capacitors have bleed off resistors that take some finite amount of time to remove all their stored energy. If there is still voltage on the reset line when the phone reboots then the reset line may not have actually been activated thus preventing a true reset of the phone. Switching a switch can sometimes allow stored energy to dissipate more quickly than through the bleed off resistor.
So while I do believe that the switch can play a role in the behavior we've seen here, I don't believe that drawing pentagrams is going to work. It may however allow enough time for the bleed off resistor to dissipate the energy on its own...
Same thing, pluged in IPhone to recharge nothing, it died overnight.
was prepareing to swan off to local Apple store (on a Sunday) thought i'd check the internet, this worked first time.
Well done.
Not so well done Apple!!
WHAT SHOULD I DO TO PRVENT PHONE FROM GETTING SHUTDOWN FREQUENTLY
If frequent occurrence, I'd definitely take it in to an Apple Store.
This was a singular event for us.
Turn it off occasionally. This will clear its memory. If it is very frequent, however, take @flatmap's advice.
Thank you RJM. You saved me a trip to the Apple Store!
I had have the same problem of suddenly died in my iphone 5 , I see all who tried RJM's method is worked but it didn't for me .
