My iphone 5 suddenly died.

My iphone 5 suddenly died. It will not turn on when I plug it in. It was working well the night before and nothing happened to it over night. The battery was charged.

I'd set the "This solved it" button against your entry - but I don't know how to do that - I guess it's up to a moderator to decide whether that's appropriate?

I've rebooted so many times holding HOME/SLEEP at the same time. My phone still continues to shut off then turn back on. No apps are open. This has been happening all day long. Battery is 41%. Earlier today is died completely. While charging, apple logo flashed on/off. After 3 hours, did the hold/sleep which this time it took me to Itunes plug in display. Rebooted again, the phone turned on with 3%charge.

Genius bar people in 2 minutes decided and tersely announced that the phone is dead and and since this phone is 370 days old (not within 365 days) you are not covered under warranty and you have to dole out 270 bucks to get a "new" one. I was told that this "new" phone has 90 days warranty but if you pay $ 550 you get 1 year warranty. What a scheme. I was told Apple never refurbishes and sell the phone as new but when asked if it is new why do I get only 90 days warranty and not 365 days. Explanation was hilarious- for additinonal $280 you will get full year warranty. I am very surprised and disappointed with all that has happened in last 1 week and did not expected this from company like Apple

My iPhone died when installing iOS 7.0.6. I tried the solutions you've suggested i.e. holding the home and sleep buttons simultaneously after first toggling the mute button a couple of times. It hasn't worked.

My new iPhone 5s is still dead.

Unfortunately, I was unaware that back-up is not automatic every time I connect the iPhone to my Macbook Pro.

If it is at all possible to restore my iPhone I stand to lose a few months of data.

At this stage I do not know whether my four-month-old iPhone is broken beyond repair.

I see that others online have had the same problem when installing iOS 7.0.6. I am stunned that Apple can release software with such disastrous consequences for their own devices.

I naively trusted Apple sufficiently to install their upgrade without first ensuring that I had a back-up.

Backup IS automatic when you connect your phone to iTunes on your computer, unless you have gone into iTunes Preferences and turned off automatic sync on the Devices pane, or you have set up automatic backup to iCloud. Right now go to iTunes Preferences, click on the Devices tab. Do you see any backups? Is "Prevent ipods...from syncing" checked. If it is, you checked it; the default is unchecked.

Not if you set up iCloud backup on your phone. You were prompted to do this when you set up the phone.

Anyway, HOLD the HOME and SLEEP buttons at the same time until something happens. If nothing happens after holding for at least 30 SECONDS charge for 30 minutes with the wall charger and try again. If still nothing happens your phone is broken. But unless you have had a catastrophic hardware failure SOMETHING will happen. Either the phone will restart, or it will show an graphic of your iPhone connecting to iTunes. If it shows this then connect the phone. The phone will restore iOS, then prompt you to restore your backup, either from your computer or iCloud.

Thank you Lawrence, but I've tried many times to reboot my new (4-month old iPhone 5s) pressing the home and sleep buttons simultaneously, but nothing happens. I'm left with a black screen.

My screen went black in the middle of installing iOS 7.0.6 (the latest OS from Apple).

I'm stunned at this. It is cold comfort to know that I'm not the only victim.

All suggestions welcome.

Thank you Lawrence. I have tried all that to no avail. How is it possible that an OS upgrade from Apple can destroy one of its own devices? Do you think that I shall have to replace my phone? It is a very worrying development for me as I am dependent on my iPhone for work (as well as for family and social life). My phone should be under warranty as I bought it only 4 months ago. Unfortunately, I did not realise that I needed to actively initiate the back-up process regularly. My photos update themselves to iPhoto when I connect the device to my Macbook and I assumed that the same happened to other data, such as contacts. Thus I may have lost four months of new data. All advice welcome.
