My iphone 5 suddenly died.
My iphone 5 suddenly died. It will not turn on when I plug it in. It was working well the night before and nothing happened to it over night. The battery was charged.
iPhone 5, iOS 6.1

Randito3, if "The top and home buttons work when they want," then you have a hardware problem, IMO. Take it in to the Apple Store if you have one nearby.
Well, my gadget, that is iPhone 5S suddenly stopped responding on the 1st of January 2014. At first I was pretty much frightened because of the data inside.. Then just googling I found this forum and read that 10 seconds both HOME and SlEEP buttons could help. And indeed it helped to start my iphone from the blank screen.!
Thank you so much! My phone died and was the worst time of my my life!
Apple need to sort this out
Life saver- just had i5 die for the first time today, so reset was invaluable. Few hours of panic at absolute reliance on it for basic passwords, numbers etc. Off to apple shop tomorrow to grill them.
Just happened to me. Working and then all of a sudden, nothing. Tried the trick of toggling the silent switch twice, and then holding down the sleep and home buttons simultaneously for about 10 seconds, and it rebotted. Really scary.
Didn't work for my husband's phone. This is extremely frustrating! It was charged and left on the charger over night, dead the next morning and nothing is turning it on.
Didn't work for our phone. This stinks!.
my iphone5 just dropped dead.. wont charge, wont go in dfu mode it is like dead.. it is already 5 hours in the original apple charger, i took out my sim card, i replaced it, i plugged it in my macbook pro, and still is dead!
Charge it for 15 minutes with the wall adapter. Then hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons at the same time until an Apple logo appears, or 30 seconds has past. If nothing at all has happened after 30 seconds your phone has a hardware failure.
As crazy as it sounds you might try toggling the "silence" switch a few times before two button re-boot. There are mixed opinions on this but if it works you dont care about crazy you just want a fix.
It's not late yet my Friend. You can Change it now if you don't understand why iPhone is the Best. ;)
Thank you RJM. My iphone 5S suddenly died for no reason and I tried your suggestion of:
It work!! Thank you, thank you for posting this 🙂
My iphone 5 died...battery was acting a little funny, but wasn't consistent.
Was working fine, sitting on the counter overnight and just stopped working the next day. Won't charge or power up, reset doesn't do anything. Took it to the Apple store, they couldn't get it to power up with a different battery or with no battery, they didn't know what was wrong with it, didn't see any corrosion or water damage.
Warranty ended Jan 2. This is the first out of warranty failure for an iphone, can't believe it's 20 days after and there's no grace period. This blows.
Tried the toggle trick also just for the heck of it, no dice.
Thx rjm!!! worked with my 5s. Strange night. Headlights wouldn't come on until I toggled the switch a few times... then phone dies. Must be the thought it will be 10 below tonight. If phones and cars can think, that is...
Thanks very much RJM! My iPhone 5S died this morning in just the same way - I'd tried pressing all the buttons in a normal way, holding the on off switch for a while etc. and was beginning to think it was dead as a dormouse!
But your trick of toggling the silent switch a couple of time, then pressing home and sleep together worked fine for me. I'd set the "This solved it" button against your entry - but I don't know how to do that - I guess it's up to a moderator to decide whether that's appropriate?
N.B. IOS version is 7.04. Apologies for briefly saying the version was 7.0.5 - I got that from a pending update message - it's 7.0.4 build 11B554a.
I'll try upgrading to 7.0.5 now and see what happens!
Thanks very much again!
