Somebody out there must know the answer and if so, please let me know. How do I get my HP Laser Jet 6p to work with OSX 10.8.2?

It prints, but does not print the preview. It prints the following:

                        %APL_DSC_Encoding: UTF8 % APLProducer: (Version 10.8.2 (Build 12C2

I am new to mac and if there is any help, laymans terms would suit me.

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

HP only support the laserjet 6P on Mac OSX up to 10.5.8, they have not made any new drivers since then. Try a generic driver, it may work.

Have been in contact with Guntenprint who forwarded me link to download. I beilieve its been download but unfortunatley whilst the printer responds immediately, it is still not 'behaving'! I know it may seem a dumb question, and it probably is, how do I check to see if the download is active?

Look in the downloads folder, see if it has finished. Then install the software.

    Thank you.

Whether or not is was downloaded, I've now clearly done so, and it congratulated me!

I'll now try printing. Do I need to follow any specials steps after the download, ie in setting up the printer. Do I need to dellete former printer details and enter new printer details again?

Gutenprint notwithstanding, the HP LaserJet 6P/6MP are shown supported (and recently updated) in the January 2013 release of HP Printer Drivers 2.13 for OS X.

Ok, I've downloaded the drivers as suggested.but still not printing as it should.

It's now printing one page as opposed to many, but it still has the jargon on top of the page as depicted in my original post?

From this info you advised, it does suggest, does it not, that the HP Laser Jet 6p is supported.

    Meanwhile, any other advice.

    Try resetting the printer:

    Reset Printing System

Use the Apple Laserwriter (PCL) driver.

Tried re-setting printer - still the same.

Looked up Apple Laserwriter but found that it warned against using it as the system may require specialist attention if installed and required to be removed?

My eyes and eras are open!

Did you install Gutenprint or the January HP v2.13 drivers from my previous link?

The only HP driver support available for the LaserJet 6P/6MP is a postscript driver, or a generic HP LaserJet Series PCL 4/5 driver. An even longer shot is the HP LaserJet 5M or 5MP drivers.

Use the HP Jetdirect - Socket Protocol setting.

I had already installed the Gutenprint, and then added the drivers from the January HP v.2 as suggested.

Should I have un-installed the Gutenprint drivers first, or doesn't it matter?

I'll wait to hear before putting the next step into action.

If the Gutenprint installation procedure offers an obvious uninstall button or script, then uninstall it, but do not delete the installer. If this is less obvious, don't bother for now.

Concentrate on setting up your LJ 6 with just the latest HP drivers via the Print & Scan preferences. If this does not cooperate, you can fallback on Gutenprint.

I've unistalled Gutenprint. In laymans language, how do I check which printer drivers are being used by my Laser Jet 6?

  • VikingOSX Level 6 (15,701 points)

From the Print & Scan preference pane, dead center of that panel, look at Location: Kind: and the name of the driver you have configured for the printer is shown.
