im updating my ipod to the 6.1 software, during this process my screen went black and it told me to plug connect to itunes. i plugged my ipod in my computer on itunes and it is in recovery mode. gave me the option to restore my ipod, if i do so will i lose my photos/data

You will lose anything that you have failed to put on your comptuer or in icloud.
You should never attempt an update without making sure that your content is safe first.
how do i cancel this update? my ipod is still saying plug into itunes. i tried unplugging it and turning it off and on again but nothing is working. i dont want this update anymore.
You have to restore the iPod via iTunes on your computer. The iPod will also be update. That is the way it works.
